Costco’s Mission Statement for Goodness of MissionCostco’s mission statement for goodness of missionA goodness of mission depends on all three components of business statements, the mission being well balanced between narrow and broad, the vision being graphic, directional, focused, flexible, feasible, and easy to communicate, and the philosophy has to be inspiring while also showing the values and beliefs of the organization. The extended mission statement that was sent to the shareholders stated Costco’s desire to bring value to the customers with low pricing and quality goods, excellent customer service, adhering to a strict ethics code that is based around treating all involved with the company well, and ending with responsibility towards corporate citizens and the environment. I believe Costco showed many of these very well in its mission statement, but may have lacked on a couple areas that could have been explained differently.

In summary, the Mission Statement of Costco

“Costco is an honest company to share with shareholders. And at the same time, the company’s mission statement says that its mission is to create products that the consumer is satisfied with, and have good faith that they are going to purchase them. Costco’s mission statement may be less focused on what it does that is important to them but it will reflect company values and actions to the benefit of everyone. By offering low-cost products that serve a diverse customer base and are highly reliable, Costco keeps the values we share with customers, consumers, and employees relevant to the business. It will make Costco better and more informed about the challenges we face, and more accountable to customers. Costco also delivers the most quality products, especially the quality that customers are willing to pay, on a timely, affordable basis, all in a more accessible and accessible fashion that is easy for our customers to find, the only way for us to succeed better, more easily and more quickly. Costco believes, for that reason alone, that its mission statement is a great tool for helping us grow and deliver better value to our shareholders and the broader communities that depend on the business.”

The Costco mission statement was very broad in regards to its general goals because it told of what its goals are, but did not take any specifics into what it was going on, but hit on multiple large points for the company such as pricing and customer service. The company didn’t make any claims to do the extraordinary, but rather just stated their general aim and ethical code to their shareholders. The message Costco sent to its shareholders with an extended mission statement very clearly stated their aim to please what is essentially all involved with the company as well as respecting everyone and everything else. Some of this could definitely be taken as inspiring as the company set its aims higher than just providing a good experience for the customers while looking to grow as a business and attract more shareholders. Many companies use a very similar mission statement, but don’t actually follow through and rather target higher profits at the expense of some areas that Costco follows through on, such as employee wages.
