I would be frustrated in many ways because I would be losing a valuable member to my team. Although, I think this is probably the best decision. Handling this situation can benefit the team in many ways. At least now we can hopefully hire someone with more time and dedication to our project. By replacing him it allows his team to get a replacement that can fully concentrate on their project only. This will eliminate the stress overall throughout the team. When each team member is putting an effort to doing their share that can make for a happy and successful team.
Im not sure that keeping Olds was a good decision for the team. I understand that he is very experienced at his job but there are many talented people out there. I feel he tried compromising with Crosby and he did talk to Olds about the situation so he did try. But if keeping him was a priority I would have went about the situation a bit differently. Once I realized that there was an issue I would have reported immediately to top management to resolve problem before it got out of hand. As team manager it is my responsibility to make sure my team is capable of doing their jobs and if not taking care of the situation. It is not fair on the other team members if they get overloaded and suffer due to another member. I understand he felt spread thin and if he enjoys his other job better then thats where he belongs. After all, we the company as a whole is a team and you need to do what will benefit them as a whole.
There are couple advantages of a matrix type organization that are apparent in this case. One of the advantages is being efficient; individuals divide their time across multiple projects on a part or full time basis. They also showed that their company tries to successfully put the right qualified people in the appropriate areas. They show they have a strong project focus. Also, they have the big promotion that every wants. It gives employees goals to strive for, in order to move up the corporate ladder. They showed the companys main disadvantage was lack of control. Since matrix structures are somewhat staggered, it causes quite a few managers to have control over different areas. This can result in total chaos if not properly handled.
There are a couple things that the management could have done differently to manage this situation more effectively. I think they should have thought about how much time and effort was needed from one person to do
