The Integrity and Courage of Cesar Chavez
Through the years, individuals have shown that a single man can make a difference. Men who, when committed to a cause, will rise up with honor, integrity, and courage. Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain without fear. It takes courage to be a leader to cross the threshold and face whatever comes your way. Cesar Chavez was such a man that had the courage to stand up for what he believed in. Cesar Chavez was a famous labor leader. He helped agricultural workers with problems they faced in the work force. Chavez led several strikes to help the migrant workers get higher pay and started a Labor Movement. Chavez also urged Mexican-Americans to register and vote. The actions that Chavez took called attention nationally. With his attitude and courage he led other Mexican-Americans to speak up and stand up for themselves. At age 10, Chavez began life as a migrant worker when his father lost the land during the Depression. Chavez and his family packed their belongings and headed to California in search of work. During this time he would encounter the conditions that he dedicated his life to changing: wretched migrant camps, corrupt labor contractors, meager wages for backbreaking work, and bitter racism. He joined the Navy during World War II and got a job as a fruit picker afterwards. Around this time, he became committed to a self help group known as The Community Service Organization. Chavez soon began to help the farmers of California. Using non-violent protest and The National his protests gained publicity and soon exploded into a nationwide boycott on grapes and lettuce. The producers of these crops hired illegal workers and even people to beat protesters. Though many, including Chavez, were persecuted and even jailed, the boycott went on. After a long struggle that lasted into the 1970s, labor contracts were beginning to be signed, and farmers were being treated fairly. Cesar Chavez continued to give his time to help farmers and maintain The National Farm Workers Association he started. Cesar Chavez was a great man of morals, commitment, courage, and love for his people. He dedicated his whole life to “La Causa” and lived as all men should live.
