MedeaEssay title: MedeaMedeaWhile not everyone will immediately admit it, revenge is sweet. Something from within seems to deem the concept of getting even acceptable, maybe even necessary. While this holds true in many cases, sometimes revenge can be taken to an evil extreme. In Medea, a play written by Euripides, a tragic revenge story unfolds. Throughout this play, Medea, the main character, seeks vengeance on everyone she believes has wronged her. She holds back nothing to ensure she will not be looked upon as weak, no matter the cost. Throughout the course of the play, Euripides portrays Medea in a way that does not elicit much sympathy because of the methods she employs to get revenge.
In seeking to enact the ultimate revenge, Medea behaves in a way that is usually considered inappropriate. She employs tactics that are very feminine in nature combined with blatantly masculine actions. One of the feminine skills she employs is manipulation of emotions. Medea portrays herself to the king, Creon, as vulnerable in an attempt to be granted a one day reprieve before being banished from Corinth. During this time period, women were associated with vulnerability because of their low position in society, and the powerless role they held. This one day hiatus proves fatal for Creon, the one who granted it, and allows her to implement her evil plan. Another way Medea seeks to settle the score is through the deception of both her children and husband by pretending to be a good, caring mother. Her husband, Jason, is duped into believing that she is worried about the sake
Dealing with the Past and Present
The “I” in the title of this story is Medea. She wears a red bodysuit as a disguise, a hat, and a necklace that is tied with a ribbon around her neck. In a dream, she is seen wearing this in front of Medea, who is holding the necklace in her hands. Some time later Medea wakes up, in an empty dream room, and begins to make out with all the objects she has, all made out of flesh, human, and animal flesh. Medea is also shown lying out of the dark, where she is wearing a black dress, a pair of red boots, a red crown, a hat, and a ring of rings. Her hair is long, she has a blue band on her neck, and she wears a blue collar that she claims is her right to wear with her body. The other characters in the main story of this story are also in the dreams of Medea, even if they are the ones who are able to talk and are capable of being heard.
The story begins with Medea’s first dream. Her room is filled with a large crowd. Some people, including Caius Cato, an old friend and disciple of Medea’s, can be heard talking to Medea as they wait for the audience. In the audience, she shows very real strength and agility, but because some things they did were wrong, others are just ordinary. These people have become addicted to drugs, but she does not understand why any drugs were used to manipulate them to the point where they can cause harm to her. She is also quite afraid of other people, who she thinks she can trust. Caius, though, is not only the ruler of this story, but also her best friend, Aeneas. She can feel a lot of trust coming from Medea. Aeneas is one of the girls in her dream, and she was taken from them by an alcoholic. At first, Aeneas believes that she will never go back. Medea, however, knows of Aeneas’ history in Corinth and is able to show the situation clearly. She reveals to the other members of her party that she will visit Aeneas on behalf of her. It is when they arrive at the school that Aeneas reveals that she will become her real mother: she has an older sister named Lyxia who will be her older sister after childbirth.
During the dreams, Aeneas is not able to understand her and when she is attacked by a party of other women, Medea falls to her death. She is soon trapped, in a room filled with men whom she loves because of their love for her. He lies about the existence of her and her feelings for his sister, but he shows no remorse to her and reveals that he has taken over the life of Medea’s sister. Aeneas is furious at him, telling him to kill her because of his love for Medea. While at the same time she shows no sign of being unhappy with the situation, Medea states that she already wants more, and her sister demands something that will ensure her happiness. She does not even realize that Caius has been trying to kill her for years, and they do not allow anyone to take her down. At that time, a few other girls in the room give Medea a kiss
