Course Description:
This course examines ways to optimize the physical flow of goods and materials within a firm from acquisition through production, and movement through channels of distribution. It focuses on applying logistics theory to aviation management problems in materials handling, managing inventory, planning capacities, and locating distribution centers. It includes case studies with aviation/aerospace applications using computer models.
Goals:
This course is designed to give the student an understanding of logistics and supply chain management. The importance of logistics on the “bottom line” as well as in customer service and satisfaction are examined. Logistics strategies for domestic and global markets are explored. Students will also assess the impact of technology and training on logistics systems and discuss future logistics challenges.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon course completion, students will be able to:
Discuss the role of logistics management in the aviation/aerospace industry and address major contributors to the body knowledge.
Develop and understanding of the importance of logistics and supply chain management within manufacturing and service organizations and the economy as a whole.
Understand the importance of customer service measures as a key indicator of logistics system effectiveness and the importance of improving customer service performance.
Understand the role of information systems and internet technology in inventory management, order processing and supply chain integration. Understand the significance of the growth of electronic commerce on logistics systems.
Appraise those factors and processes involved in logistics system planning and describe the nature and techniques of strategic logistics planning.
