This essay formulates five critical questions relevant to analyze the case study on Meli Marine and justifies the choice of questions. Firstly, five critical questions are formed, based on the contents of the case. In addition, these five critical questions are justified and evaluated, by discussing the reasons of carrying out each of the questions and their relative effectiveness of case study on Meli Marine, respectively. Critical questionsWhat are the challenges in the Container Shipping Industry that Meli Marine had to consider, when achieving its acquisition of Teeh-Sah Holdings?What are main trends in the Shipping Industry and how those trends could influence the acquisition of Teeh-Sah Holdings by Meli Marine?What are the key competitor strategies that enterprises in the shipping industry could adopt?What are the key resources and capabilities of Meli Marine that could enable its development as one famous corporation in the shipping industry and could furthermore support its strategies in the future? Whether entering the Asia-North America market was the right move for Meli Marine and whether the corporation should enter the Asia-North America market by acquiring Teeh-Sah Holdings?Justification and discussion of relative effectiveness of critical questionsEach of the five critical questions is effectively carried out, to help researchers get deeper insight and understanding of the case. The first two questions help researchers get more knowledge and insights of the shipping industry, where Meli Marine operates, via figuring out the challenges and main trends in the industry. These are essential external environment facing by Meli Marine regarding its operations and acquisition of Teeh-Sah Holdings, and deeper understanding of the external environment facing the corporation could benefit its decisions in operations via minimizing threats facing the corporation in the market place (Mason, 2007, p.10). Evaluating and analyzing of external environment is also one essential aspect within SWOT analysis approach, which is one effective tool of achieving strategic designing for corporations (Flander, 2014, p.31).
The third question helps to summarize key competitor strategies that enterprises in the shipping industry could adopt. The strategies adopted by other corporations, including the competitors of Meli Marine, in the shipping industry could cast light on the possible strategies that the corporation could adopt in its operations, in order to achieve its competitive advantage and sustainability (MacIntosh & Beech, 2011, p.15). Managers in Meli Marine could refer to the findings from the first two questions and combines the competitor strategies figured out in question three, to figure out some possible strategies that the corporation could choose, in its operations in the future. The fourth question could help researchers to get deeper understanding of resources and capabilities of Meli Marine. There are many possible strategies that Meli Marine could adopt in its operations, and the determining of which strategy to finally adopt should also refer to internal resources and capabilities of the corporation, besides the considering of its external environment (Giovanni, 2012, p.265). So, after summarizing and gaining the key resources and capabilities of Meli Marine, researchers could furthermore determine which of the possible strategies they had identified from question three are available for Meli Marine. Results from this question could lay a foundation for the answering of the last question and help the corporation to properly grasp its market opportunities. The fifth question could help researchers to finally figure out whether Meli Marine should enter the Asia-North America market by acquiring Teeh-Sah Holdings. This question fulfills the final goal of the research, to determining whether entering the Asia-North America market was the right move for Meli Marine. The question is properly designed based on the former four questions and is effective to guide the researchers to finally achieving their research objectives on the case. It contents two sub-questions, asking whether entering the Asia-North America market was the right move for Meli Marine and whether the corporation should enter the Asia-North America market by acquiring Teeh-Sah Holdings. So, researchers could critically think over and justify answers on each sub-question to finally determine the best strategy for the corporation.
