The critical thinking habits, asking questions, examining evidences and accepting uncertainties help the readers to understand the story the way it should be understood.
Asking questions is the best way of critical thinking habits to understand the story âThe yellow wallpaperâ. It is the best tool to get to the main idea of the story and understand it as the story builds up. The question starts with why Jane is locked in the âhauntedâ house with windows having bars on it. For instance one can ask question like what are the nine syllables that the narrator mentions in the poem, or what does the narrator intend to communicate when she refers herself to desperate objects like a loaf, an elephant, a house, a cow and a calf, a stage purse and a means. In the story one can ask various questions like: why does the narrator find the house she taken stay in to be queer? What did queerness of the house imply to her? In addition to that a reader can also tend to ask what the wall paper really means or intended to imply in the story?As the reader continues reading, another question arises in the mind that âIs Jane crazy?â .Making questions and focusing on finding the answer takes the readers to the main idea of the story.
Examining evidence is the next way of critical thinking habits which makes understanding the story easy. Examining evidences included in the story helps us to think the way we should. In the story, a reader can know that Jane is a Mental patient with serious problem after examining her activities and conversations and analyzing them. The right examining of the evidences present in the story is very important to get the idea of the story.
Accepting Uncertainties is the next important way. A reader must ignore some activities or characters of the story. If one tries to find that out, it takes him a whole lifetime. So, we have to ignore some less important activities or characters. Accepting uncertainties is the next important critical thinking habit which leads the reader to the right path.
