The fictionalized version of the famous ocean liner offers a glimpse of British social structure in the early 20th Century. The cruise ship is partitioned along class line – divisions that become clear when Jack Dawson, a third-class steerage passenger, falls in love with the wealth socialite Rose Bukater. Despite her familys disapproval, the two young lovers experience a few brief moments of joy before the ships maiden voyage ends in disaster. When the ship sinks, many wealthy passengers are rescued as poor travelers drown.
This film illustrates Webers concept of life chances. Notice how the ships closed stratification system inhibits jacks upward mobility. Watch for the scenes in which jack and rose take turns in each others social worlds, using their unequal social resources to pursue vertical mobility with greater or lesser success.
