On a yacht, a passenger named Whitney points out an Island in the distance, a place that sailors avoid. Rainsford is a big game hunter, and is well known for a hunting trip in the Amazon River. As the yacht sails through the darkness, Rainsford became more suspicious about the island that Whitney pointed out. Suddenly, he hears three gunshots in the distance and moves toward the railing of the deck to investigate. Holding himself onto the rail to try and get a better look, Rainsford drops his pipe, loses his balance, while trying to catch it. He suddenly, fell into the water. He cried and yelled for help the yacht quickly disappeared into the fog. Rainsford decides to swim in the gunshots direction. He hears the sound of an animal and heads straight for it. He hears another pistol shot. He assumes someone else is on the island, so he wonders who it is.
Rising to the surface, the boat is seen to disappear in the distance. His bodyguards call 911. They begin to search the vessel, but are unable to find it. They have been searching all over, hoping to determine who the suspect was. They turn to a group of fishermen with the intention of asking what they are doing there, but are turned down. When they return to the boat’s rudder, they find a body that looks like Rainsford, but has no shirt, shorts or ties to it. It is believed that the boat broke down on board, leaving a trail of mud and the body of a young woman nearby. The police report continues:
The boat’s captain, Walter Ephraim, reports a distress call on the bridge, one of the people he was chasing. When Ephraim steps to the side of the boat, he discovers that the boat is in a much higher degree of distress than usual, so he heads out. The boats captain, Scott D. Lee, can’t reach the coast, so he turns his attention to the beach and quickly starts searching for the body and boat. When he does, his boat is lost. A couple of minutes later, the boat is found. He wakes up on the shore and thinks about the boat, which only had five minutes of life to live. He realizes that, at some point, the house had been burnt. He takes the opportunity to make amends for the crime committed by himself, and the boat has been found. Lee tries to comfort the people, but they are in utter disarray and are forced to abandon the family. He quickly orders the fishermen to leave this boat and go to the shore. However, Ephraim and his crew are immediately killed when the boat explodes in the sea, killing the others. He can still hear the shouts of the boat’s safety crew. As the boat explodes in the water, the fishermen try to run over and keep track of it so that it is safe to return later. With their help, they find it and find one of their boat’s occupants: Whitney.[6a][7]
Sometime later, the police report includes some additional information. The investigators who received the initial report, James M. O’Neill and John M. Brown, believe that the boat had been driven from the beach onto a nearby cliff and been thrown up in the sand. In the interview, M. O’Neill, J. O. Brown, John M. Brown, and the FBI investigators mentioned that the boats were not properly registered as being at sea, and had their serial number engraved on the hull. Also, all of the investigators found fingerprints on the boat’s license plate. During the investigation of the incident, investigators also found a bullet hole on the underside of the hull and an area of the boat that had previously been used as a shelter.[8] Although the boat had been wrecked, there was no apparent sign of damage to the boat’s deck, and Ephraim believes that he found nothing of use, though he fears that there might have been a car accident between himself and the Boat Graveyard Sheriff. He, too, believes that the boat’s owner is a well-known criminal ring, and believes that this individual may be a member of the same ring that murdered Eph

In addition, exhaustedly Rainsford reaches the rocky shore and falls into a deep sleep. He wakes the next afternoon and sets off in search of food, he begins to search the whole jungle for food, and he walks to a bloody trail where a large animal had been beaten. Rainsford thinks the house is a mirage, until he opens the Iron gate and knocks on the door. Ivan, a man with a gun all dressed up professionally, answers and refuses to help Rainsford until another man, walking down the stairs with fine clothes on that looks like he is a millionaire, came to Rainsford and welcomed him inside.
Zaroff greets Rainsford warmly and has Ivan show him to a room where he can dress for dinner. The huge, dining hall features numerous stuffed and mounted heads, trophies that Zaroff has brought back from his hunting adventures around the world. Theres only large animal heads.
