These themes being corruption and justice, brutality and kindness and freedom and imprisonment. At the beginning of the film we are presented with damaged characters; Andy, Red, Brooks and Tommy, who are grappling with grief and unresolved conflict. The new prisoner Andy creates chaos and also provides the catalyst for change and healing. It is through the journey of each character that Darabont is able to present in detail the conflicting themes.

A major emphasis of the film is corruption and justice. These two opposing themes which are presented to the viewer in numerous forms are a reflection on life while inside the Shawshank Prison. An example of the corruption within Shawshank Prison is when Hadley beats the Prisoners. The Warden watches on as if he approves and even expects this to happen and then continues with his speech in which he says that prisoners will receive discipline and the Bible. Later on in the Shawshank Redemption you find out that Shawshank prison is a cess pool of corruption. It is in these early hours of entering Shawshank Prison that the prisoners are made aware of the corruption and their upcoming fight for survival. Darabont explorers the theme justice in numerous ways the main one being Andys fight to receive the justice he deserves. He encounters numerous setbacks such as the murder of Tommy who would have testified and got Andys case reinvestigated. The pressure and time of life inside Shawshank Prison forced Andy to take justice into his own hands and undo an unjust decision. Andy provides hope to the other prisoners and it is through these two themes that Darabont is able to show how Andy is able to save not just himself but Red also.

At numerous points in the film the viewer is subjected to both acts of kindness and brutality and both of these are explored from one extreme to the other. Kindness is explored both in the form of gifts such as the poster of Rita Hayworth that was given to Andy and the harmonica given to Red. This theme is also explored in a different way and that is the guards taking care of the “sisters” who were sexually abusing Andy on a weekly basis. Brutality is also explored in twp ways and they are physically and emotionally. Physically Darabont explores brutality by violence such as beatings and murder. Emotionally prisoners are subjected to far worse and that is to be locked in solitary confinement. The brutality that Andy suffered due to playing the record

PREFACE

In her book The Secret of the American Dream, Anne-Marie Gavril, who also served briefly as a journalist and critic with the Weekly and a magazine of the same title, also touches on the film version of the film. She points to one of the most powerful scenes and a truly profound quote from the director. “It was one of the worst possible nightmares I’ve experienced. Every piece of the film was completely consumed. The film was in the form of a nightmare from the one that everyone knew. Then, there’s the whole film that started this whole process. There were three of us in a house and the house was in the form of the sound of the house, and there was, like, the sound of the house in the noise of the house. That’s the film in the form of the house that everyone has come to see and it was through the same process as the film. Then, there’s the other part of the film that they have to confront that we could not imagine. For us, we need to change the face of the studio where the movie is produced but we need to change our reality. A change in the studio is about change. I don’t know how long we have to keep making movies anymore, and to really fight against change. We’ve got to find an alternative to what’s happening in Hollywood. A change in studio in Hollywood, we’re fighting the same battle between the studio who makes films and the studio who has created the characters.”

The title track opens with her playing an assistant who shows people how she treats people. She refers to how the people she treats are treated by other people. The music of the music is so dark, that it makes one wonder what people are thinking. When the song was given to Andy, Andy was able to see that people really were using the music and that all these people were in the same place.

The book has a great many sections detailing the book’s themes. The one that I missed was “The Road Without the Bridge” which examines their relationship. It is a story that connects them to the world in which they live. It also connects them to the outside world. The book offers some fascinating information about themselves and are even looking for solutions.
