Data Governance, Quality, Integration, and Security at A GENERAL Library
Present day libraries exist in an ever changing, ever challenging world. Computers, online access, databases, e-books, and other electronic media have thrust libraries from their old paper world firmly into the technology of today and tomorrow. A GENERAL Library is no exception to this. The military library straddles a fine line between the military and the public to serve both military members and their families. Data management and information security are at the heart of these changes in the library world and specifically the military library.
Data Management
Data management is the most important aspect of the library’s day-to-day functions. Data is at the heart of every transaction. It controls what information is included in the catalog, who can see the information, how to tell what is checked out, when material is due, and much more information. Maintaining governance, including quality and proper integration, is essential for providing quality and useful information for library employees and the public..
Data Governance
Data governance is a “process that oversees data stewardship across the organization. It usually guides data quality initiatives, data architecture, data integration, master data management, data warehousing and business intelligence, and other data-related matters (Hoffer, 2011).”
Figure 1 provides a visual for data governance, demonstrating how integral governance is to the relationships involved in the database (Russom, 2008).
