Michelangelo was a painter, sculptor, and architect from the seventeenth century. He was born in Caprese, Italy on March 6, 1475. After the death of his mother, he and his wife and children moved in with a stonecutter, which is one reason of getting Michelangelo started with sculpting. At age fourteen, Michelangelo was an apprentice to Domenico Ghirlandaio in painting and Bertoldo di Giovanni in sculpting. Michelangelo sculpted Madonna of the Steps and Battle of the Centaurs between the years 1490- and 1492. The masterpiece of his early years was the Pietġ for St. Peter’s. Between 1501 and 1504 he sculpted the Statue of David in Florence. In the years after 1519, he designed the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. He died on February 18, 1564. Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest artists of European art and one of the founders of the Italian Renaissance.
The statue of David is one of many of Michelangelo’s well-known masterpieces. He created the Statue of David between the years of 1501 and 1504. The statue stood at fourteen feet tall and is the most famous statue in the world. One of his first statue, Pietġ, that he sculpted from 1498-1499, became one of the most famous statues in the world. Another wide-known piece of work from Michelangelo is the ceiling in the Sistine chapel. Michelangelo spent four years drawing and painting the design. By 1510 the ceiling was halfway down and by 1512 it was complete. For most of the time he spent painting, he was on his back for eight to ten hours straight. The ideas of the painting came from the Bible. Michelangelo is important to history because he made some of the most famous pieces of work in the world.
Michelangelo impacted society in a couple of ways. One way was being skilled at many things such as painting, sculpting, architecture and poetry. It is said that Michelangelo wrote sonnets before Shakespeare. Also he is a great inspiration for artists and many people look at him because he was one of the starters of the Renaissance. Michelangelo is a good role-model for the artistic people in the world.
Michelangelo should defiantly be famous and known world-wide. He took part in a big part of the Europe’s history—the Renaissance. The Renaissance in Europe was a huge time of improvement in art, literature, and technology. Since Michelangelo sculpted two of the most famous sculptors of the world, he should be recognized.
