Derek Jeter was born on June 26, 1974, in Pequannock, New Jersey. From the time he was little, Jeter showed he had all the promise of a great baseball player. In his senior year at Kalamazoo Central High School, he won several national sports awards. Jeter was chosen the 1992 High School Player of the Year by the American High School Coaches Association. Jeter was drafted right out of Gator High School by the New York Yankees in the June 1992 draft. Derek Jeter maintains his place as one of baseballs most talented players today.
After being picked up by the Yankees Jeter began in the minors, hitting .295 with five home runs in the 1993 season. In 1995, Tony Fenandez, shortstop for the Major League Yankees, was put on the disabled list. Jeter had gotten his first chance to play in the Major League. Jeter made his debut on May 29 against the Seattle Mariners. The following year, Jeter played his first full season as a major league baseball player, batting .314 with 10 home runs. Jeter proved he had talent on the field as well with a fielding percentage of .969. He helped the Yankees win the World Series that season against the Atlanta Braves. Jeter has been an outstanding player in the major leagues since his rookie season.
Derek Jeter won the 1996 American League Rookie of the Year Award. He helped the Yankees to achieve World Series wins in 1998, 1999, and 2000. In 2000, Jeter was named Most Valuable Player in the World Series and the All-Star Game. He also received Gold Glove Awards in 2004 and in 2005 for his performance on the field. Jeter is admired and respected by all associated with the game of baseball, including the fans.
Up to this time, Jeter has an overall batting average of .316 and average fielding percentage of .975. In 2009, Jeter passed Lou Gehrigs record with this 2,722nd hit — the most in the Yankees history. Jeter has multiple career-high averages in 1999, and was the winner of the All Star Game MVP and World Series MVP awards in 2000. He has remains a consistent leader in the American League in runs scored and hits over the past ten years. Since 2003 Derek Jeter has been the Yankees team captain. Jeters postseason play has earned him the nick names, “Captain Clutch” and “Mr. November”.
When not on the field, he has acquired a lot of attention for his quiet and confident demeanor. Jeter has appeared in many commercials and uses his prominent sports star role to help children. In 1996, he established the Turn 2 Foundation which encourages young people to be healthy, succeed academically, become leaders, and to stay away from drugs and alcohol. The foundation supports and creates these programs in order to achieve these goals.
