COMMON PROCESSES OF DISCRETE SYSTEM
Entities movement:
Case – 1
Entities enter the system as input through boundary
Move between the components within the system
Leaves the system through boundary as output
Case – 2
System may initially contain some entities
Circulate between the components within the system
Leave the system (in whole or in part) through boundary as output
Case – 3
Entities may never leave the system boundary
Entity creation:
To create entities as inputs to the system:
Customer arriving at a bank
Car arriving at an intersection
To create entities as inputs to the system, a common process acting as an entity source should be considered. The module representing this process is called source, create, generate and so on by different simulation language.
Properties of module:
The module should allow for the setting the time of creation of the first entity. This value may be constant or random variable.
Module should provide for the selection of the time between entity arrivals which may be constant or random variable.
Module should allow for the assignment of a name to the entities created. This name will be assigned to the entity as an attributes.
The module should allow for the batch of creation of entities.
The module should provide for stopping the creation of entities after a creation number have been created.
The module should provide for stopping the creation of entities after a certain amount of time has elapsed.
Entity termination:
In most systems entities that enter the system also leave it. The module that represents this entities departure is called terminates, sink, depart, out and so on by various simulation language.
Examples –
Customer leaving a bank
Cars leaving the intersection
A desirable property of the module representing the termination process:
Have ability to specify the number of entity terminations required to end the simulation process.
Provides for stopping the termination of entities after a certain number have been termination
Route selection:
In many practical situation entities have alternative routes that they make take. Example
Cars arriving an intersection
Arriving customer choosing different waiting lines to join
Customer at the beginning of a waiting
