Lyrics
Well first of all this song is about losing someone close to you. If you saw the music video, they have it set in World War two. It is a very special song to me because I am in the military and am deploying in October and it has lots of meaning. But, for socialization it plays on peoples’ fear of death. Since you were born you are told death is bad. When someone died you were conditioned to be sad and cry. In other cultures such as the people of Egypt, they thought they were an after death. They filled the coffins with tools that could be used in the after world. There are other cultures that have a different outlook on death, because that is how they were raised into the culture. Another aspect of the song is religion and getting into heaven. We are socialized to do good so we can get into heaven. After the person in this song dies they wonder if they will be admitted into heaven.
To me there are not too many norms in this song. I feel this way because it is a song about military men dying in combat and losing people they love. Only 1% of the American population serves in the military, so to many that is not the norm. It is in a way the outcast thing to do. If I did have to pick out some norms they would be the same as above, the fear of death and the thoughts of not getting into heaven.
