My Life as a Single Mother and a Teacher
ELIZA S. PANAGASinabbaran Elementary SchoolEchague,IsabelaMy Life as a Single Mother and a TeacherBeing a single mother is not my choice. It’s the circumstances beyond my control brought me to this situation. This is the toughest challenge I ever had in my early years of being a mother. This tragedy started when I was three months employed in the department of education. My husband, who is a soldier, died in a battle in defending the nation against its enemy. He handed me the responsibility of being a mother and a father to our innocent two year-old son and a seven year- old baby girl who is still in my womb. My life is so miserable that time. I was twenty-five years old when God gave me the most difficult test in life. With my young age I dont know what to do and how to begin my role.Working and trying to raise my children at the same time is not easy. I constantly wear multiple hats in different places as a model, provider, disciplinarian, comforter, adviser while dealing with life challenges on a daily basis. Making time for self-care and leisure is often a struggle especially when I was assigned at the far flung barangay school. The place of my assignment adds so much stress that made me more depressed. As a new recruit in the teaching profession, I was assigned to one of the farthest barangay school in our town which is 25 kilometers away from the poblacion. To reach the place, I have to ride on my single motor for almost three hours. I have to be strong enough to maintain its balance because in any moment I can be crashed in a 50 feet high cliff from the hilly, rocky and muddy road. During rainy seasons, I have to leave and entrust my single motor in the barangay where I pass by and have to hike for almost two hours, cross rivers and mountains over one another mountain with no houses nearby to ask rescue in case of emergency. Since my two colleagues in the school are residence in the barangay, I have to travel alone. This is too risky for a woman who only depends on her mouth as self-defense.
