Prison GangsPrison GangsPrison GangsMichael DooleyAiken TechCRJ 242.013Prison GangsPrison gangs are flourishing across the country. Organized, stealthy and deadly, they are reaching out from their cells to organize and control crime in Americas streets. Law enforcement personal began to systematically monitor gang activities in the 1970’s. Working together, their initial attempts were to identify only gangs which had some semblance of formal structure, a constitution, bylaws, mission statement, or some identifiable tenets guiding their activities. However, with experience, staff began to realize that even less well-organized groups could still pose significant threats to the security and orderly running of an institution. Many of these smaller groups occupy the fringes of various conceptual and organizational frameworks, most notable ethnic, religious, or social organizations. Nevertheless, they have demonstrated that they can constitute a threat to prison security and public safety (gang buster). In 1986 the United States Department of Justice identified 114 different prison gangs in the U.S., and with a membership that may constitute as much as three percent of the total prison population in the United States. Of those, five have emerged as the most powerful and influential: The Mexican Mafia, the Lu Nuestra Familia, the Texas Syndicate, the Aryan Brotherhood, and the Black Guerilla Family. They all maintain the membership requirement of murder or the spilling of anothers blood. In addition, each of these organizations relies heavily on illegal revenues from the drug trade (police studies). Some of the gangs are nothing but a group of inmates in one prison, while other gangs could be large enough to connect with other branches through out the U.S. Prison. Gangs are flourishing from California to Massachusetts, in 1996, the Federal Bureau of Prisons found that prison disturbances soared by about 400 percent in the early nineties, which authorities say indicated that gangs were becoming more active. In states like Illinois, as much as 60 percent of the prison population belongs to gangs. The Florida Department of Corrections has identified 240 street gangs operating in their prisons. (Insight on the). Prison gangs cause a lot of problem in the correctional system because what it is doing is separating inmates in to groups and then the groups don’t like each other. Though out this paper I will break down the top five prison gangs and discuss there similarities and differences.
Prison gangs have an impact on prisoners lives in prison, on prison administrators and staff. The impact of prison gangs on prisoners lives may be measured by the amount of violence which takes place in the prison. While it may be said that gangs play a role in stabilizing the inmate environment (by protecting some inmates from assaults, exploitation, or other harm), they also contribute to the amount of violence found in prison. Also, as they are being released into the community on parole, these people are becoming involved in actions related to prison-gang business. Therefore, it is no longer just a corrections problem, it is also a community problem. The gangs control the prisons with contraband. They have what others want, “Contraband is power” (Insight on the). In Texas during the 1980s, the prison gang problem became so severe that prison officials almost lost control of their prisons. Institutional homicides were at an all-time high, and correctional officers were injured and even killed by prison gang members. Today, it has been reported that prison gangs are responsible for over half of all prison management problems nationwide. Prison gangs have expanded their activities outside the walls and these gangs represent one of the newest and most dangerous organized crime syndicates in America (police studies).
One of the biggest gangs in the correctional system is the Aryan brotherhood. The Aryan brotherhood was started in San Quentin prison in 1967. The reason it was formed was to protect white inmates from the blacks and Hispanics. Many of the original members had a Nazi type gang history. Other names for the Aryan brotherhood are: AB, Alice, Alice Baker, Tip, and Brand. In the beginning, the premise of the Aryan brotherhood was white supremacy and German and Irish ancestry. Over the years, the Aryan Brotherhood has moved away from the Neo-Nazi philosophy, with members staying with Irish ancestry and Viking symbolism and history. The Aryan brotherhood has a “blood in-blood out” rule, which means the only way in is to kill, and the only way out is to be killed (gangs or us). The Aryan Brotherhood has several was to identify them by the symbols the use. Some of the symbols are shamrock
n, or symbols of the occult; such as the three-pointed star. It is said that the black men have swastikas on their heads (i.e. their blood on their necks). However, in many respects, I think that all of the symbols of the Aryan Brotherhood were a deliberate attempt by people to gain power on the white board. I’d like to look some deeper at why these things are there. To begin, I think it is because the Aryan Brotherhood didn’t have a racial dimension. I would ask, how could they have wanted to kill a non-racist black or white person, if they were trying to do it to the white person? The reason the Aryan Brotherhood, even as the Black Panthers and other groups of abolitionists in the United States, are black is that they didn’t want for black people to get killed and they didn’t want the black person to get killed because the black person was a bit of a danger to them, and maybe more so to the white person.
As a black man, you are basically fighting. You are fighting some kind of resistance and trying to make a difference. Â This is one of the things that I really appreciate about the way the AryanBrotherhood and the Black Panthers operate these days. It’s like that old white woman who was killed on purpose; it was a racist act by a white group as a result of racism. Â That woman who was killed at a Planned Parenthood didn’t have an organized death penalty because none of her black friends would see her killed or anything similar. Â Her death probably was a tragedy for the White People and the Black People.
As the black man, you will always fight to protect that white person from the Black people. Â If someone is black, he or she must be killed, as if in some weird way he is a person of privilege. He is not a person of race. Â He never is a person of race. Â He is not a member of some racist group. Â Of course, there are some white people who get killed, but they were in the wrong group, and they didn’t do this.
Black people are like snakes.
The White People may have started talking about their own safety earlier but they have never been like this. There are other people out there who think they are doing something wrong and are making things really bad. Â They put in this horrible training. Â This training teaches you what to do. One of the biggest things in the black community is to not act like a jerk. Â This is one of those things where the Black man is allowed to make decisions, to have a discussion, to argue. It makes the black man feel very powerful. Â He is allowed to take the stand for them, even as he is trying to push his own agenda or be an activist on behalf of the whole community. Â This is how we get involved with each other when we are being threatened by the white people of America.
In other words, there are very, very, very black or immigrant or immigrant or African American allies who can tell the white people who put themselves in their shoes and talk to them or get their hopes up. Â They are there to help them in any way they can. They can explain a lot of
