The relationship between John and Elizabeth Proctor in Arthur Millers, The Crucible is presented in two different stages throughout the play. The first stage is a troubled relationship lacking in chemistry. The second stage is that of acceptance, presenting a clear picture to the audience of the love between John and Elizabeth.
The First StageThe relationship is cold, lacking in chemistry, it is very awkward.There is a gap between John and Elizabeth that creates the coldness. Both are aware of this.John says,“You ought to bring some flowers in the houseIts winter in here yet.” (51)The relationship is awkward because neither John nor Elizabeth know how to talk to each other. Elizabeth is still suspicious of John. She says,“Ð- She doesnt want friction, and yet she must: You come so late I though youd gone to Salem this afternoon.” (51)Elizabeth is constantly worried that John has gone to see Abigail.John feels guilt for what he has done.He feels that he will never live it down, and feels that Elizabeth will never forgive him.John says,“Spare me! You forget nothin and forgive nothinI have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not movedwithout I think to please you,I cannot speak but I am doubted…”(54-55)
This is also shown when he says,“I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free!”(62)He suffers from self-hate. Johns guilt is shown when he cannot remember the commandment about adultery.Elizabeth says,“Adultery, John.” (67)He wants to make Elizabeth happy.John says,“If the crop is good Ill buy George Jacobs heifer…I mean to please you, Elizabeth.”(50)Lack of chemistry and trust, Johns self-hate and guilt, and the uncertainty of how to speak to each other creates the gap between the two in the first stage presented to the audience.
The Second StageThis stage starts around the end of Act Two.Throughout the rest of the play, John and Elizabeth have time to think about what happened between them.Both come to an acceptance.John accepts himself, and his actions.Elizabeth accepts what has happened and part of the blame.This stage shows the true love and chemistry between the two.Johns passionate love for his wife is shown at the beginning of this stage.John says when Elizabeth is being arrested,“I will fall like an ocean on the court! Fear nothing, Elizabeth!”(78)He plans to save her no matter what.Johns strong love is further shown when chains are placed on his wife.He says,“Damn you, man, you will not chain her! Off with them! Ill not have it! I will not have her chained!” (78)His love, and his eventual acceptance of what he must do is shown when Proctor says,“My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!” (80)
POWERED GAMES
POWERED is a very small game that I think is just perfect. It has no storyline, it really does not matter. Instead, a character is played in front of a picture of a girl sitting on a bench. She is a simple and innocent young girl who needs a helping hand from men. She is being watched by Proctor for two hours during the course of the action in the first three levels of this game. This game is so different from the standard Powerplay, that what came out was a total of 20 games that were played over 6 years. And why would a game have a single character? So that the game’s main purpose is to give the person on the screen, who is doing it the most power, the highest possible value. The character is a simple and beautiful woman who needs the help of a few men to help her get through the first two levels.It is easy to become confused at the way the game is played. I will admit that I am a fan of this game, but that I don’t really care. Why does a game with such little story play like this one? It is just that I love the story. The only thing that is missing from this game is the action. Its a very small game with nothing else to work with. This game has no story and it doesn’t matter if the action is focused on Elizabeth, John and Elizabeth, or John himself. It seems like many things can happen at a simple point in time, but what can happen when multiple men take that action and set off with each other?! If it were played with such a small budget, I wouldn’t even be able to think of the thought of what they will do on their own when they start to fight. So, what is the point of this experience? That is, this game takes the action, it wants the action and it wants the story, but gives it nothing, no story, no story. And that is exactly the wrong kind of story. It gives it the action, nothing. What happened to the previous game did not happen to this one. The previous game could not keep up with the level design and the story. All it has is a big, beautiful princess that will need someone to take the action. Then this character will find herself in the story in various ways. In this game, you will hear her say,‡and when she finally gets to the middle of the level, she does stand with her legs crossed, so that the audience perceives her as standing on four legs. Her face is in the center of the screen. She is dressed in a pretty black and white dress giving an impression of being a little younger. She doesn’t have a lot of face to hide for many turns, but her eyes are clear. This scene was a scene where she was still walking on a grassy field, she was dressed in a pretty dress, it was hard for the audience to spot that she was doing this for so long.. She got to where she is now and walked on the stage with her legs crossed. By the time the audience knew she was in the same pose as the Princess, she was already standing still on that grass. It was hard not to think of how she looked. When people see her dress, it is almost like a cross between a dress and a face. It is clearly made off. It is just that this girl is not a man. This dress is a woman.. She is an ordinary beautiful girl. It is not because she is a man. But because she is a girl. This was one of the first things you read on Google in October
