Reflexion on Happiness
In the “The Mystery of Happiness: Who Has It and How to Get It” an ABC News Special, John Stossel, the host, looks into the objective factors that make some humans happier than others and the subjective aspects in pursuing of happiness. As an introduction, Mr. Stossel emphasizes his discussion by proving that happiness is the most essential desire in human history. Especially when the human living condition has been enhanced, the pursuit of happiness is not only a desire, but it is a human right as stated in the Declaration of Independence developed by Thomas Jefferson.
Since the definition of happiness is ambiguous and has changed during different time periods, in different cultures, and even in different individuals, Mr. Stossel rather defines what is not happiness: drug, sex, food, shopping, movies, money and many other materialistic items. These may make one feel good; however, this is not the kind of long-lasting happiness that will make one most content and most satisfied with his or her life. Interviewed by ABC NEWS, one lottery winner, who divorced after receiving her jackpot, laments that the cash did not buy happiness.
The objective factor of happiness is in the genetics of human beings. The latest brain and behavioral research strongly suggests that happiness is a fifty percent result of human genetics. Research shows that one who has more activity in the left frontal area of his or her brain is more likely to happier than one with minimal activity. The biological make-up in human brain predisposes people to happiness or unhappiness.
