Walt Disney World Case
Walt Disney World is a supportive company, which provides cast members with various types of orientation and training so as to develop our sense of belonging towards the company. I had to learn about the Disney culture, take safety courses to prevent injuries, and also courtesy courses. Instead of sitting back and listen to the lecturer, these courses are all very interactive, with group discussion among cast members from different departments, and we had to present our ideas to the whole class. This can enhance our communication skills.
During my work, I had to communicate with the guests. Even if they did not need help, cast members have to approach them and offer help instead of just standing aside doing nothing. It was challenging because my English is not fluent enough to chat with guests non-stop, and we are not as outgoing as Americans who can chat anything at any time. Besides, I had to handle complaints from guests. Sometimes the supervisor and manager may not be around to deal with the guests, so we have to appease them first before the manager came. These situations always happen and they help to enhance my problem-solving skills. Furthermore, there are many emergency situations like parents losing their child, sick guests vomiting in the shop, or kids peeing on the floor. Cast members are required to react quickly to these situations as they will affect other guests and the operation of the shop if not handled properly.
To conclude, my internship is a valuable experience as it was my first time working overseas and I had to learn about how to communicate with people from different countries effectively. Exposing myself to different cultures allows me to broaden my horizons and prepare myself for my future job. Moreover, My English improved greatly since I had to speak in English every day. I am able to express myself better in English now. If I had the chance to pursue my future career there, I will not hesitate to do so. At first it may
