Domestic Violence
The purpose of this search and report is to allow myself to use the Internet or Online
resources to investigate one aspect of a human services program. The report will focus on treatment programs like Domestic Violence LINKLine and Against Abuse.
Domestic Violence
Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, psychological or financial abuse. Domestic violence involves behaviors, which a partner, ex-partner, family members, or friends have control over. According to U.S. National Library of Medicine (2012), “Domestic violence is a serious problem. It is a common cause of injury. Victims may suffer physical injuries such as bruises or broken bones. They may suffer emotionally from depression, anxiety or social isolation” (para 2).
Domestic violence and sexual assault tends to run in a generational cycle of abuse and or a history of abuse within the families. According to Refuge House (2012),
Nationally, one in 5 [sic] women in the United States has been raped in her lifetime, and nearly half have experienced some [sic] other form of sexual violence. One in five men, too, have [sic] experienced either rape or some form of sexual violence. One in three women have experienced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner (para. 5).
Children who have grown up in this type of environment, such as physical and verbal threats are more likely to experience the same methods of abuse as he or she become adults. Several factors in society lead up to domestic violence. Example: When one lives with criticism, he or she will learn to criticize; if a young child watches his or her parent(s) come home in a bad mood, and witness firsthand violence among the parents, the child may begin to see this as a normal way of life. Males who witness this behavior might believe this is normal and the manly thing to do is hit women.
Discrimination
Domestic violence does not discriminate; domestic violence crosses ethnic, age, gender, racial, national origin, religious, and sexual orientation. Heterosexual relationships between women experience the majority of domestic violence. Although women tend to be the more common victim of domestic violence, men are also abused; men experience domestic violence verbally and emotionally (Smith,
