Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947 in Durham, Maine. Donald Edwin King and Ruth Pillsbury King were his parents. He was born normal unlike his brother. His brother was adopted two years after birth by the kings. The Kings were a happy family until one night Donald told the family he was going out to get cigarettes and was never seen or heard from again. After this Ruth took over raising the family with some help of her relatives. They moved around a lot but eventually found their way back to Maine. Stephen and his brother decided to publish their own newspaper call “Davids Rag” they sold it for 5cents a piece. Later in high school Stephen and his friend wrote 18 short stories called “People, Places, and Things-Volume 1.” King made his first actual published appearance in 1965 in the magazine Comics Review with his story “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber.” The story ran about 6,000 words in length. In 1966 he graduated from high school and took a scholarship to attend the University of Maine. He made his first small sale–$35–with the story “The Glass Floor”.
