Donald Tusk made history October 9, 2011, by becoming the first Polish prime minister to be democratically re-elected for a consecutive term since the collapse of communism. Donald Tusks centrist Civic Platform (PO) took 39.6% of the vote, followed by its main rival Jaroslaw Kaczńskis national-conservative Law and Justice on 30.1%, the liberal Palikot Movement on 10.1%, the agrarian PSL (Civic Platforms junior coalition partner) on 8.2%, and the socialist SLD on 7.7%, the survey by TNS OBOP said.
The main reason for Mr Tusks victory is most likely the economic success Poland has experienced over the past years. For the last three years, the global economy has been dealing with one of the most severe financial crises which results also affected European Union member states including Poland. In face of global economic unstability Polish authorities have introduced an “anti-crisis package” supporting employers and defending employees in order to protect Polish economy from the aftermath of the global crisis. The actions taken by the government proved effective. Poland was the only European Union member that did not experience a recession in 2009 and it was probably one of the gratest achievement of Donald Tusk as the Prime Minister. Moreover, Polish economy witnessed economic growth, which is also maintained in 2011 and the unemployment is on decline.
Another important reason behind Donald Tusks spectacular triumph is his pragmatic policy thanks to which Poland has become a welcome and reliable partner in Brussels. Civic Platform has maintained relatively close relations with its neighbours whereas Law and Justice – the Civic Platform predecessor was, by contrast, highly antagonistic in its relations with Russia and Germany. The liberal daily Tages-Anzeiger writes: Its a blessing for Europe that Tusk will remain in power. KaczyĹ„ski drove Poland into isolation in 2007. Tusk has firmly anchored the country where it belongs – at the heart of Europe. These words show that Europe support Poles choice. Additionaly, Jaroslaw Kaczynski anti-German remarks, in a newly published book, caused bad voting results for already divided Law and Justice and strengthened position of Donald Tusk.
Many young, well-educated people, that create Civic Platforms electorat, believe that Donald Tusk proved he is the right person to be Prime Minister. He succesfully dealed with the most tragic and difficult events in our countrys contemporary history: the Smolensk catastrophe and floods. For many prople Mr Tusk stands for stability and continuation especially now, when the government is consistently carrying out projects aimed at modernising the country. It is strongly connected with fact that Poland will hold the European Football Championship in 2012. But another important matter needs to be mentioned while considering reasons for Donald Tusk re-election, namely
