Dont Blame the Eater Op-Ed
In “Dont Blame the Eater” David Zinczenko claims that fast food restaurants are increasing the number of obese children in our country. He uses a number of rhetorical strategies and relates to his own past to achieve his purpose. Zinczenkos purpose is to warn the fast food industry of the harmful effects they are having on American youth.
Zinczenko uses rhetorical strategies such as rhetorical questions and relates to his own past to assert his warning to the fast food industry. He questions, “What ever happened to personal responsibilities?” He uses these questions to initiate other opposing arguments first before he refutes them. They are used to show the insensitivity those questions impose on children. He also uses rhetorical questions such as how are children “supposed to find alternatives?” He uses these rhetorical questions in order to further his own argument. He attempts to ask a logical question in order to refute those questions previously made. Zinczenko also relates to his own past to further his argument. He describes his life as a boy filled with fast food that led to obesity. He uses this to appeal to his audiences emotions and relate to how obese children might be feeling now. However his text does contain a logical fallacy. He states that these obese children have no other choice but to eat at fast food restaurants. Also that there his few alternatives they have. This is not entirely true because there are alternatives such as simply eating at home and children do not have to eat at fast food restaurants it is a choice they make themselves.
