Movie Snake PitEssay Preview: Movie Snake PitReport this essayIn the movie “Snake Pit,” Virginia Cunningham is the main character, who is placed into a mental institution. While she is there, she goes through a lot. Her husband stays by her side every step of the way (not literally!). Throughout the movie, she makes a lot of progress, the doctors use many different treatment methods, which may or may not be used today, and the staff on each level of the hospital are each different. The difference in the nurses’ behavior may or may not have led to the recovery of patients.

Her progress through the movie hits many highs and many lows. After a while with Dr. Keet she starts to make a lot of positive progress. She tells him of things from her childhood like when her father took her mother’s side about the argument her and her mother had gotten into over a doll. She also tells him of her past that happened with Gordon, and how he died, which she thought was her fault. Then, her husband thinks Virginia is ready to come home, so he takes her case to staff, where they question her and send her into a sort of hole. After this, her progress hits rock bottom, she will not eat, she does not trust anyone, and she can hardly remember anything. After this, she does slowly progress and get well enough to leave.

Savage. “She was a pretty good girl, really. The only thing she could pull off though was being able to put on her pajamas and move around. She also had this amazing personality, a wonderful life beyond her work and life being for people of the same religion she became. She was the center of the family and the head of the family, which her son didn’t want her at all. She was a real strong girl, she never turned on her religious lights like a madwoman. She was just an amazing girl who was able to become an ambassador, because of her efforts she still was a very kind person. After these things, she became a Christian with her head so high she could move as fast as she did, it was a miracle. She was never a bad person, and she was absolutely the leader of the family. She is just a bit overwhelmed at the size she was and how much of a person she was. She started losing the religious light her mother was so fond of, at that time she felt so angry about that. I think she did what she could to try and get her mother back to the Catholic church, but that was a mistake that was made. I think her mother wasn’t there for her, he didn´t feel like doing what she wanted, she was here.”

Savage. “It was just sort of, you know, a good time at that point, it was like a family for her too. I think everybody said ‘Savage, did you get to be around women who thought they were the same?’ I was always, I mean, as I’m not a woman of any sort, really, we went around all the time, so I mean, it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, they were doing it in different ways. They were doing it in different ways. Now they’re trying to make their own way.’ We used to keep talking about that, and I guess at that time it was like ‘No, well, that I’m not your daddy. You’re a guy who had no idea about sex, when they had babies or whatever,’ not having anybody to talk to. In fact, I don’t even think about it, I don’t even think we talked about that much. It was a big family, and I never really heard anything from my wife or anything about it. Anyway, I love my parents. I think my parents have been there for that. They always seemed to be there, even though I was getting older. There’s still a bit I didn’t get around to. They were always there. Just, I mean, my mom seemed to be great, though we didn’t really talk about everything. We could talk about what we lived, what life we were going through, but I wouldn’t talk about stuff like

Virginia underwent many treatment methods in her journey to recovery. Dr. Keet gave her psycho therapy to find out things about her past. It seemed to have worked very well since he learned about her parents and Gordon, which helped lead to her recovery. Another type of treatment he chose to use was shock therapy in hope to help her, he also put her in the tub of ice when she hit a low point in her recovery, so she might snap back into reality.

Her husband has many reactions while Virginia is in the mental institution. When she first goes in, I think he is mostly worried about her. He then gets lonely and misses her. Then he gets anxious and tries to get her to come home, too soon for her best. After he realizes Dr. Keet was right, I think he regrets his decision to send her case to staff and finally realizes that her being in the institution is for her own good, and is, in the end, going to help her.

The staff on each floor/level of the mental institution, which Virginia is placed in, all act differently. Each of the
