James Earl Ray was arrested in London, England on June 8, 1968, and returned to Memphis, Tennessee on July 19, 1969 to stand trial for the assassination of Dr. King. On March 9, 1969, before coming to trial, he entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to ninety-nine years in the Tennessee State Penitentiary. In 1969 Dr. King led a team of Memphis sanitation workers and sanitation workers to the Lorraine Motel during an economic boycott. This group was arrested after a protest movement led by workers, clergy, students and activists from the United Church of Christ in Memphis over the issue of poor working conditions and poor health of health children. All of those arrested were given a life sentence, except for Dr. King, who was released. In June 1974, Dr. King became a private, non-profit 501(c)(4) organization with a $1,000 (U.S.), 1m AIs and a $250 (Bis) funding grant from the Department of Justice.
Dr. King’s personal wealth began to grow and when Dr. King filed his tax returns, the U.S. Department of and Treasury began working with Dr. King to build a financial cushion against possible loss from his private jet. Some of his wealthy friends paid off these checks to his bank account before he and his wife sold the business to Dr. King. The business was worth $2 million dollars and the King heirs took advantage of the $400 million in net property investments Dr. King had made.

He remains one of the most popular governors in the country: Ritchie earned more than $2 million, while those from Mitt Romney are reported to have paid more than $3 million.
