Many people believe the drinking age should be lowered, while others argue that it should not be. Most of the individuals who want the drinking age to be lowered are younger people who believe that the current age of twenty one is too old. There are some adults who argue the issue. The citizens who want the drinking age to stay the same are mostly adults who are arguing that lowering the drinking age will result in more deaths and alcohol abuse of teens.

Melanie McNeely believes that the drinking age should be lowered, she states: “I think if 18 year olds were legally allowed to consume the beverage of their choice, law enforcement could focus their attention on more important issues, such as drunk driving, which affects people of all ages.” The organization Why21.org believes that the drinking age should stay at the age of twenty-one because if it was lowered, it could cause more alcohol traffic fatalities as it did in the early 1970’s when 29 states began to lower the drinking age. Melanie McNeely is a page designer for the Red and Black, which is the student newspaper for the University of Georgia. Her qualifications do not make her very reliable. On the other hand Why21.org is sponsored by the organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). They have the qualifications to write on the subject and are much more educated and up to date on their information. They also have reliable information and evidence based facts to support their view. McNeely is writing to a college audience, and her writing is not as well written as the Why21.org’s. They seem to be writing to a more diverse audience.

This information on why21.org is more trustworthy than McNealy’s article. They use many reliable sources in their writing, while McNeely does not. They state,” …the 21 minimum drinking age law has saved about 900
