Drug abusers demonstrate a higher tendency to workplace accidents and are less productive. The U.S Department of Labor estimates that employers lose a lot of money because of accidents, loss of productivity, health care, and workers compensation cost; drug abusers become a serious financial liability, for these reason employers do not want to hire drug users and constantly look for the presence of behavior symptoms among current employees.
In addition, some employers want a drug-free workplace because they seek to receive any federal project or grant. Eleven states offer a premium discount on workers compensation for companies that implement the drug-free workplace.
