Summary
Drug testing is a way to evaluate the type and possibly the amount of legal or illegal drugs taken by a person. This test is commonly used to check for illegal drug use by employees (before an offer of employment is made and randomly at any time after hire). A drug test can also be used to evaluate possible accidental or intentional overdose or poisonings, to monitor compliance with a drug rehabilitation program, and to determine the presence or absence of drugs for medical and or legal purposes. If the test is used as a drug screen, all prescription drugs can be detected as well as illegal drugs and alcohol.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Eastern Missouri filed a lawsuit in September 2011 challenging a policy at a public college in Missouri forcing students to submit to mandatory drug tests as a condition of their enrollment. The ACLU charges the policy violates the constitutional rights of the students at Linn State Technical College.
Implications of HR
Random drug testing is costly, and not only in monetary terms. Employee morale and loyalty can be hurt, as well. The author suggests looking at some alternatives that can accomplish the same objective, making your workplace safe and efficient.

Policy Statement
The University System of Georgia promotes and requires a drug-free work place among its employees. Employees in “high-risk” jobs on a regular basis shall be subject to pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random drug testing for evidence of use of illegal drugs. Additionally, an employee who has notified his/her supervisor that he/she has a drug related problem and is maintaining employment under Board of Regents Policy 8.2.18, Voluntary Disclosure of Drug Use, shall be subject to random drug testing.
