One night in Mississippi a drunk driver hit my brother-in-laws friend Shanes family when they were on their way out of Wal-Mart on their way home. Ms. Wendy, Shanes sister, was the driver, she had bruises, and a broken leg. Ms. Ann Shanes mom was not injured, but had a lot of broses. The kids were in the back of the mini van the two babies in the front row were scarred and bruised. The youngest child Mary was in the 3rd seat with Hailey the oldest child. When the drunk driver hit the mini-van Mary and Hailey went flying and they even had their seat belts on. Right before the drunk driver hit the mini van Hailey was getting ready to lie down. Since Hailey was in that position when the drunk driver hit the mini van the impact from the seat belt made here stomach spilt open. After the drunk driver hit Shanes family, the drunk driver tried to get away. Ms. Ann says that it was like a blessing because at the time of the accident the Wal-mart parking lot was full of paramedics, nurses, and other medical staff there. They all ran up to the mini van and called 911. One of the paramedics even stopped the drunk driver from driving away. When they drove Shanes family and the drunk driver to the hospital, the drunk driver did not notice, or even seem like to care about what he did. Now a days drunk driving has a huge influence on the teenage citizens. Teenagers think that drinking and driving make them look cool, but it really is not cool. Every year they have 17,000 or more people who die from drunk driving. 5,422 of those drunk driving deaths were associated with traffic fatalities. This is unacceptable. There is a reason why they chose the age 21. That reason is as follows; there would probably be more deaths per year if the age were lowered. In the year 1998, the drunk drivers killed 2200 fifteen year olds through twenty years old. The most unfortunate thing about drunk driving is that the majority of the time it is the drunk person that lives through the crash while others might perish. The reason for this is because the drunks body is relaxed and not tense; therefore, his body will be relaxed when he the accident happens so he doesnt break any bones. When the person is tense they are more likely to have broken bones. To stop drunk driving parents should talk to their kids and spend more time at home with their kids. If teenagers want to stop drunk driving, they need to get involved in school or community activities. Some people say that a friend is someone who is always there for you and help you with your problems. Well, drunk drivers think differently about this, they think that the friend will do what they are doing. If your friend is a drunk driver or is becoming one then you need to try and get them help. If you are a good friend, then at a party that involves alcohol, and your friend is drinking, take your friends keys away or try to watch how much your alcohol your friend consumes. Every year drunk driving becomes more of a problem and causes more deaths. Sometimes teenagers get the wrong information and that is why they drink and drive. (Landau, pg.27) After a few drinks some teenage drivers think that they can drive better tipsy than sober. (Landau, pg.27) This is not true because you have a much better chance of not getting in a wreck when you are sober than, you have when you are not sober. “Most states have laws indicating that any driver with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.10% or more is legally intoxicated.
