what is the social impact of the invention of the telescope?
There have been so many historical events that have happened through the centuries. We looked to astronomers for their theories and beliefs so many years ago but those theories soon changed to scientific proof as technology changed. To think that it started from an invention called the “telescope” and used by a man named Galileo in 1609. From telescopes to space shuttles, how we have come so far.

With the invention of the telescope, astrologers now took theory and turned it into scientific proof. Many major discoveries were made due to the telescope. From the rings of Saturn, discovered in 1610, to Pluto being reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. These examples are just a few that made a huge impact to scientific understanding.

How does a planet get classified?
orbit the Sun
have enough mass to pull itself into a spherical shape
have cleared out its orbit of other material or “cleared the neighborhood of its orbit.”
Its this third requirement that Pluto hasnt fulfilled; its just a fraction of the mass in its orbit, while the other planets are millions of times more massive than everything else in their orbits

Then in 1961, Russia sent a man to space.
Earth, planets, universe, solar system, astronomy and science; they all go hand to hand and have had so many changes throughout the centuries. From theories to proof and then proof to new knowledge (i.e. reclassifying what it takes to become a planet; Pluto).

Who knows where we will be in another 500 years; maybe your address may start with “what planet do you live on?”
