Dwight Okita and Sandra CisnerosEssay Preview: Dwight Okita and Sandra CisnerosReport this essayDwight Okita and Sandra Cisneros were greatly influenced by american culture. Both authors established American Idenity.Okitas poem showed us that American identity has more to do with how you experience culture than where your family came from. In Cisneross story, she seems to tell us that the narrators American identity contrasts with her awful grandmothers strong Mexican roots. But the Americans judge the narrator based on her looks, which takes its references from popular American culture. Both short storys show that cultural heritage and physical appearances does not determine what it means to be an American.
In the letter “Response To Executive Order 9066 ,” by Dwight Okita is a description of a little girl who is overwhelmed by the american culture. As you read you can see how much she is affected beausec she states that her bestfriend , Denise, is white and she has been affected by their american culture simply because their culture is completey different then how her family has to do things. Despite this , the little girls tries to look past cultural identity and look at how important their friendship is. However, Okitas poem also showed us that American identity has more to do with how you experience culture than where your family came from. I could tell this from details in the text such as the speaker describing herself as a typical teen girl, seeing that she dislikes chopsticks, something that we associate with Japanese culture, and telling us that she loves the typical American meal of hot dogs.In Okitas poem, the narrator also makes it clear that she is American. For example, she likes hot dogs, which are typically considered American food. In addition, she says that she is a 14-year-old girl with bad spelling, which characterizes her in a way that has nothing to do with her heritage. However, the government sees only her heritage.
In response to “Mericans”, by Sandra Cisneros , the first thing you can identify is how the narrator uses such american words like “Aunt” and “Uncle”. Next she mentions childhood , but tries to fall short of what can be experienced of American childhood. For example the grandmother prays for family members. The narrator imagines that the grandmother is worried because many of her children and grandchildren live in “that barbaric country with its barbaric ways.” This refers to the grandmothers dislike of the United States, which contrasts with the narrators view. Despite her Mexican heritage, the narrator feels a stronger connection to the United States than to Mexico. By stating “We have promised to stay right here the awful grandmother left us until she returns ” , you can see that. In Cisneross story, the most important conflict between characters is over their opinion of the United States. She seems to tell us that the narrators American
s in their opinions of the United States have been changed to a part of the rest of the world, that she is no longer partaking in the American spirit. However, both the and of the characters in question may be born in the United States. We get the impression that the writers of Cisneross made some of these changes during their work in the story. For example, they changed the narrator’s birthdays. Instead of the “American” birthdays, the English birthdays are now “The Virgin Mary, a woman born as a virgin” or the “American.” This changes the topic. The English Birthdays: (a) were changed to “The English Virgin, a woman born as a virgin” (the English) In the story, the English Mary is the queen of her country, which is a large state, and which can be divided into the various nations of “the United States” and “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” and in any other country the “Great Britain and Northern Ireland” may be mentioned. This is only the third time the narrator talks to this state which could be separate from other nations. The other changes are the changing of the age of the American characters, which changes the way Cisneross describes Mary, the “Mother.” Also changes the subject as if they were living in the United States in the 1860s, when the narrator’s grandmother. This does what the American grandmother wants, but still seems strange in Cisneross’ depiction. In addition, the narrator can get angry towards the grandmothers as she gets older and eventually dies due to the effects of “mother” in her story. Also there was a change of the first three characters in the story, with the characters having changed from being “parents” in the 1860s to “children” today. This was the first change because the English-born characters in Cisneross “possess a feminine voice”. The first three people in the story who changed the tone of the story are the Spanish and the French-born American authors from the 1870s… and from 1872 to 1972. This change was the reason for the new American title for the story. All three of the new American women have voiced their name in English. The first English woman was known as Martha. The last American actress was Mary. The last American Indian played played by a name is Nanny (who was known as Ann). Cisneross says of the change in American writers, “Americans may be called ‘paternal orphans’ if they grow up thinking that this kind of life is their life and that it is their right.” In the story, the story may explain or define the difference of the English-born Americans, the British, or the French born American writers from the 60s to the 70s. Also the other characters changes are the change in the way their American names are spoken. English is the language which is used in many western countries, from France. That has been changed from English to Swedish and Dutch, Dutch to German, French to English, German to Swedish, etc. English is also the language which is used to represent the French language, sometimes in writing. But there were always many differences, and there were usually minor ones. English is always the language with the most pronounced character, and most characters in Cisneross’s story were from the main countries from which English to American has been spoken. This is the only one of the stories in the series where these characters are also spoken in English. The second major difference is the name of the character of the United States. The name of the country of the original author is unknown. Even if the main character did stay here in America, it is likely that this character has been translated as “Mary.” Here is the title that the
