This article was published July 29, 2010 and was written by E. J. DIONNE JR. As the title stated it, in this article, the author argued that U.S is letting stupid politics affect their power. As arguments, he started with the internal politics, especially taxes. According to him, in other democracy with serious matters, they match their tax policies with their spending. He gave the example of the prime minister of Britain. Unlike Britain, in the United States of America, taxes are supposed to be always high, particularly on the rich. The author is strongly a Democrat because he thinks Democrats should turn the Republicans refusal to raise taxes on families earning more than $250,000 (the wealthy class) a year into an election issue. For him, the rich people in U.S. are undertaxed compared to other classes. Then, they should raise more taxes on rich Americans.
The author also discussed the economic stimulus. He said the recovery package was not sufficient enough to create more jobs, instead the rate of employment raised more. He thinks it is a waste of money, even if studies showed that they should stimulate more. And to conclude, he suggested some solutions for the problem. One of them is to reform a Senate who fails to meet his duties as a democrat.
I strongly agree with Dr. Dionne Jr. about taxes should be higher on rich people than the poor ones. The rate of taxes should be defined for each class based on their income a year. I suggest this solution to the issue because of the passage on page 114 in the reading, in which E.J. Dionne Jr. stated that: “The wealthy in the United States are undertaxed compared with everyone else.”
