Esports in Bangladesh
Introduction
Since the digital revolution, electronic games, once, the something that was looked upon as the basement activity for “nerds”, has slowly crept into everyone’s lives and has turned into an international phenomenon. It is now an integral part of almost every single youth in our generation. Millions of dollars are going in every year in the form of prizes, advertising, etc. in competitive gaming worldwide. This is known as E-sports and as defined by Wagner (2006):
“eSports” is an area of sport activities in which people develop and train mental or physical abilities in the use of information and communication technologies (p. 3).
As networking conditions improved E-sports became more and more popular worldwide. e-Sports, should not be mistaken as the activity of casual pleasure gaming at home, this is a competitive form of computer and console gaming where stable games fit for competition are selected and are hosted in competitions.
Since E-sports scene is quite in its infancy stage, and is not as visible to the world the way mainstream sports like, football, tennis, basketball, etc. are. It requires a wider exposure, acceptance and media coverage. Acknowledgement of something like this in Bangladesh seems hard to expect, especially when the grownups view it as rather a nuisance. However, the e-Sports industry and its growth are truly spectacular, and I believe there are plenty of reasons to nurture it in Bangladesh.
