He was adopted by John Allan and Frances Keeling Valentine Allan, and had a very good relationship with them until his step father became abusive and alcoholic. Edgar loved his step mother, and she was one of his biggest influences. When she died, it was really hard for him to accept her death and he started writing darker stories and poems. Some years after that, he got married with his cousin Virginia Clem, who had only 14 years old, but his marriage didnt last long because she got a very long and painful dickens, from which she died. After that Poe got depressed and started to consume opium and became an alcoholic.
Edgar Allan Poe starts the poem by telling us how he feels, hi sorrows and the sense he has of being different from the rest. By reading his biography we realize that he really never had a normal life, his parents died when he was young, his step father was aggressive, and his step mother died unexpectedly. In the first 3 lines of the poem he talks about how he never really experienced a normal childhood, how he had seen other live a happy and complete life while he was so different from everyone else, and how he felt like he didnt fit in. In lines 4 and 5 it tells us that he wanted to feel happy like everyone else but he couldnt. The spring symbolizes happiness and it says that everyone has taken from it except him. Finally in lines 6, 7, 8 we understand that all here is in Poes heart is sorrow, even when he tries to feel happy his heart refuses to awaken that emotion. He seemed impotent to share love with others and he feels like no one ever loved him. Since his parents died when he was young, he didnt like his step father and Victoria, his only love, died very young, he felt as if no one ever returned his love and he felt abandoned.
Poe also writes about the meaning of his life, and he wonders the reason of why he was born. In lines 9-12 he is wondering why did got put him in earth and why is he living the “stormy” life he has, meaning he does not like his life and even though he has look everywhere for answers for what is his purpose on earth “the mystery still binds me still” (12), he still has no clue. In the next lines, 13 and 14 we understand that the mountain, torrent and fountain is his soul, and that he has looked up and down and everywhere in himself to find the mystery of his existence. Poe describes how the time is passing by in lines 15-19, how he spent so much time thinking of what his life was for and why he had the sad and so lonely life he had. The sun, lightning, thunder and storm symbolize the time passing by him very quickly without him realizing that he had lost a lot of time trying to figure
Even in the cold and the storm, he is feeling the same way he always has.
