Title: NSA Violation of American Citizens Fourth Amendment Rights
Speech Purpose: To educate my audience of the Fourth Amendment and how the National Security Agency is violating rights entitled to us as American citizens.
Central Idea: NSA violates the Fourth Amendment.
Introduction
I. Attention Getter: Are you being watched? Does it scare you to think that the government may be monitoring your every move through social media? According to recent breaking news our lives are not as private as they may seem.
II. Credibility: Being someone who watches the morning and nightly World News everyday, Im very informed of Edward Snowden, a former employee of the National Security Agency (NSA) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) who is facing serious United States espionage charges for his recent leakage of top American secrets. Most important is his release of documents that outlines efforts of the NSA to monitor domestic and foreign phone, email, and internet use. In an interview with Glen Grenwald of the “The Guadian”, Snowden says, “The United States Government will say I aided our enemies” in reference to saying that his spillage of surveillance programs could compromise the security of the America. I for one feel this is a man protecting the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Privacy is a right to every American citizen and it should be the citizens who decided if the NSAs surveillance programs are right or wrong.
III. Thesis/Central Idea: With the recent controversy regarding Edward Snowden, the NSAs data-mining is violating Americans right to privacy and threatening our freedoms set forth with the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
IV. Preview: To understand how are freedoms are being violated and threatened I will prove to you that the government is acting illegally and unethically with their current surveillance programs.
Transition: You, me, every American citizen owns the right to privacy. Let me first provide you with some background information of the issue at hand.
I. According to the Constitution the Fourth Amendment states that: The right of people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. This right was violated when Edward Snowden released reports that the government was monitoring communication channels domestically and foreign. Key events in Snowdens release that attribute to this violation are:
1. Echelon, a secret government surveillance network uses super computers to analyze and capture key words from all electronic communications made in the United States.
2. The United States government hired secretive Israeli companies to wiretap AT&T communications.
3. Surveillance and hacking of internet communications through email for suspicious behavior of foreign targets.
