EE3003 Electronic Product Design
Course aims and objectives
This course aims to introduce students with a clear understanding of the practical design problems of electronic products at an introductory level. The objective is for students to become familiar with the concept of product design, component tolerances, production constraints, safety requirements, and EMC standards are dealt with through a case study.
Intended Learning Outcomes
•
Identify and recognize the essential design and production procedures of electronic products.
•
Apply fundamental analysis methods and theorems to the solution of the case study.
•
Design and implement a prototype for meeting the case study requirements.
•
Acquire hands-on experience and problem-solving skills in electronic product design.
•
Acquire experience in presenting the design work.
•
Form the foundation for the Electronic Product Manufacturing Project, the penultimate part of the industrial training programme run in the summer semester.
Overview of the course schedule
Week 1
Introduction of the product development cycle and exploration of this EPD course
Week 2
No laboratory session in the week
Week 3 — 4
Submission of product and technical specifications of the starter circuit [Appendix I]
Week 4 — 6
Building the starter circuit
Week 7 — 13
Designing a test jig and preparations of the bill-of-materials (BOM) [Appendix II] and test plan [Appendix III] for the starter circuit
Week 10 — 13
Preparation and submission of the product specification of your own product that will be developed in Semester B [Appendix IV]
Week 14
Presentation of the prototype of the starter circuit
Your task !
There are two stages in the course. The first stage is in Semester A. Based on a simple circuit shown in Appendix I, the objective of this stage is to let students appreciate the product development cycle. Students are required to go through the procedures of prototyping, PCB fabrication, quality testing, and engineering documentation. The second stage is to let students design their own products, based on a tentative specification given in Appendix II.
Checklist of the assignments
Assignments
Product and technical specifications of the starter circuit given in Appendix I
Demonstration of the functionalities of the starter circuit
Demonstration of the functionalities of the test jig for the starter circuit
