The short story Ў°A Rose for EmilyЎ± by William Faulkner portrays how an overly protected love could destroy oneЎЇs life. Emily Grierson, the main character of the story, first gives the reader an impression of acting inhumane and even mad. But after a closer look into her character, I think that the reader could almost understand how and why she turned out the way that she did.
Emily Grierson is a woman who became very dependent on others, primarily her father. She has grown up her whole life in the same house, probably with the same butler, and with the only company of her father. Her mother is assumed to be dead long ago. Ў°But there is nothing on the books to show that, you see. He did not know of the town gossip and this was at the advantage of Emily. When EmilyЎЇs cousins moved into the house that Emily had lived in her whole life, the people in the town noticed that Homer Barron was gone. Something had to happen to make EmilyЎЇs father act the way he did toward Emily. Meanwhile, the townspeople talked of Homer being gay because he himself had remarked that he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the ElksЎЇ
