Why is that? That was always my question when I met someone who I admire of as in their performances in their study or work but it seemed that they got lost somehow and cannot pull their life together. Even I, sometimes, wonder that what goes wrong in my life and what could be done in order to get rid of it. Until I have read this book, Emotional Intelligence, I suddenly feel like it answers my question that I have been always doubt. In additions, it helps me to understand things as well as others better. As a result, I try to follow the book’s suggestions in various aspects and it does works. I appreciate everything that comes in to my life either it is good things or the lesson that makes me stronger. In this book, it explains why someone who has superior intelligence level cannot ensure that they will success and can live a happy life. This happens because standard intelligence alone is not enough to predict one’s performance. There are more factors than that, for example, emotional intelligence also one of another type of intelligence that we have been defined it in one way.Main PointAlthough there are numerous ways to define what Emotional Intelligence or EI really is, but in general it involves “a combination of competencies which allow a person to be aware of, to understand, and to be in control of their own emotions, to recognize and to understand the emotions of others, and to use this knowledge to foster their success and the success of others”. Therefore, the one who has high level of Emotional Intelligence will be able to understand their mental, physical, and social impact that sometimes is negative and in turn affecting in their emotions, bodies, minds, or even their relationships with others. Also, they will be able to cope with everything that they face with the ability to pursue and achieve their goals.
Point often overlooked, emotions are such a big deal since they could tell us when something goes wrong or even when our desires are not getting met. For this reason, the negative emotion such as anger, disappointment, fear, or depression will occur. Thus, we cannot ignore these signals but to face them and need to learn how to cope with them wisely. In most of the time, we often try to run away of problems because they are such a headache and nightmare to us. However, if we keep running instead of facing and solving, there will be social, mental, and physical consequences to our ability to handle with emotions and these also lead to physical illness and unhappiness. Hence, we need to cope with our emotions along with balance healthy feelings of motivation, fulfillment, self-control, appreciation, peace of mind, etc. in order to learn to develop our own Emotional Intelligence.Another key point of developing Emotional Intelligence is that it will instantly affect our brain and body. To put it in short, when there is a strong stimulus, the sense of signal will directly send to the amydala or known as the emotional center of our brain, before the rational side of the brain has a chance to limit or control the appropriate response.  Apart from that, three main models to define emotional intelligence are the ability-based model, the trait model of emotional intelligence, and the mixed emotional intelligence model. Firstly, the ability-based model is the ability to perceive emotions, integrate them to facilitate thought, understand them and to regulate them in order to promote personal growth. The main point is that it is very crucial to understand that everyone does not have the same ability to process emotional information and then to relate that information to overall cognitive processes. There are four main types of emotional abilities. The first one is emotional perception. It is the ability to recognize their own emotions and to understand the emotions that are expressed in term of faces, voices, or pictures. This perception involved in emotional intelligence because unless one can perceive emotions, they cannot manage or even face them. The second one is emotional use. It is the ability to use emotions so that one can perform other cognitive actions. The third one is emotional understanding. It is the ability to perceive the shades of emotion that exist and it can tell how different emotions interact with each other. The last one is the emotional management. It is the ability to self-regulate emotions and to regulate emotion in others. So, the person who has this ability can distinguish between positive and negative emotions and handle with them in a right way. Thus, we can conclude that the Emotional Intelligence in term of the ability-based model is the ability that a person knows what feels good or bad and how to get from bad to good. Secondly, the trait model of emotional intelligence argued that people have a numerous emotional self-perceptions and emotional traits varies regarding to their personalities. Consequently, this model was measured by the respondent’s self-report, not in the scientific way. However, we have to keep in mind that in order to do this model, one needs to be able to accurately describe his or her traits first. Lastly, the mixed model of emotional intelligence is the most widely accepted that being used nowadays. This model consists of a range of competencies that are separated into different skill sets according to each picture of a person’s level of their emotional intelligence. Unlike IQ that is fixed by the time we reach adulthood, the markable point of view from this model is that we have to go forward over time so that we will be able to develop and improve our performances.
