Globalization in Brazil
As a country integrated into the capitalist world economy and cultural connections with various countries of the world, Brazil is participating in activity of the globalized world. Although Brazil is a mixed economy, the country has been wide open to the international market, that is, the country sells and buys products of various types from different countries. Being part of economic globalization has advantages and disadvantages.
When I analyze through the socio-economic perspective, I see that many multinationals organizations have settled in Brazil, bringing positive effects like substantial increase of national employment and the minimum wage on the entire country. However, this reality made effect on the increase of the number of immigrants in the country, affecting government policies and laws itself.
The cultural attitudes has changed if we compare globalization on 50’s, the period when my grandparents were born in Brazil and nowadays. Back in that time, the way people wear clothes was different, it was usual to see the clothes being confectioned at home by the mother or grandmother of the family. In education, the students used to learn Latin as a second language at school, as well knowing to type on typewriters was a valued skill. Nowadays those references has changed, fashion is dictated by trends and outfitters worldwide and in education, the English and the Spanish are considered to be the second languages to learn at school. Also, the majority of brazilians has smartphones and gadgets, what changed our way of communication in entire different way. What one day was made by long distance mails or physically, today is virtually, sending instant messages and voice calls or even through videoconference, that happens instantly. This brings direct effect on the dynamics of families. My grandfather has 12 siblings, today my mother has only me as son. My grandpa used to say that in lunch and dinner time, the entire family seat and eat together and nobody could leave the table until everybody was satisfied, fact that has been replaced on having fast meal anywhere and eating in front of the TV in a large number of brazilian families. The globalization also affect the business environment in Brazil, it’s easy to find english words and expressions when communicating. Words such as “Feedback”, “Brainstorm”, “Networking” are often used day-by-day and are being inserted more and more in Brazilian portuguese vocabulary. The access to international products, that are oftenly cheaper or even better than those manufactured in Brazil is an advantage. On the other hand, these products often enter the Brazilian market with very low prices, causing unfair competition with domestic products.
Undoubtedly, the inventions that made globalization accessible to everyone is the combination of personal computer combined with the global network, the internet. This arrangement has shortened the way on making business abroad, it’s easier to negotiate with foreign countries, it also has changed people’s purchase habits and specially, it has brought us fast access on information world wide. This new reality has interfered in brazilian traditions, like old rituals becoming less present in the population lives, for example the Sao Cosmo and Damião day, a religious party that is being substituted by Halloween, an american tradition on October.
