ESOL Teacher Interview
I thought that the interview went well for it being my first time interviewing an ESOL teacher. The teacher was very positive and wanted the best for students in the ESOL program in Griffin-Spalding County schools. She talked about how the students have a lot of academic potential that requires a diverse type of differentiated instructions. She appeared to work closely with the general education teachers to help decide the severity of the learning disability level of each student. She also seemed very motivated to implement programs that will help the ESOL students feel equal with other students. There are a lot of great ideas that she would like to see in our county, which will help our ESOL students be successful. One of the first things is to get the administrators and counselors more involved with the students. Another thing is to get more parent involvement from the ESOL community.
When giving an education to a student I feel that all students should get an equal opportunity. Just because a student is learning a new language doesnt mean they should be deprive of certain tools and strategies to help them succeed. If a student has a disability they should be accommodated so that they can learn. Students come from all different backgrounds and cultures and as teachers we should understand this and want to help. As teachers we should teach lessons that will allow immigrant to share their cultural with the class. It will not just help us but it will help the ESOL student become more comfortable within the class. I believe that new ideas should be put in place so that other students can become more accepting of ESOL students and support the language barrier and the learning disabilities.
What context or delivery model do you teach ESOL students? The model that is used is the push-in model within the academic block. Can you describe bilingual education? Bilingual education is when both languages are taught in the subject at the same time. She said it is debatable whether this is the best technique to teach students.
Can you explain the difference between bilingual education and full emersion? Full emersion is the student of another language being completely emerge in the new language without any tools to be successful. The difference is that the student of a full emersion system are immigrant minority students that have language needs and should be given support services
