Why is it to hard for men and women to talk to each other?
It is a fact that communication plays an important role in humans lives. It is use as a mainstream to express feelings, thoughts, and emotions. To establish a conversation there must be a transmitter and a receptor willing to participate. Unfortunately, marriages have been ruptured because of the absence of communication or one could say misinterpretation of the opposite sexs ways to communicate. For many, marriage is a unified, intimate society rather than individualism. However, to achieve such longed intimacy connection communication should be achieve using conversation as a main tool. But before complaining, women along with men must learn how to recognize and interpret the nature of their partners communication style. Andrew Hacker, a political scientist, has observed that although many man talk in public they are the most silent ones at home; unlike, women who tend to express themselves more at home because of its familiar and intimacy environment.
“He doesnt listen to me,” “He doesnt talk to me,” are few of many complaints women have towards their spouse (4). For women, establishing a dialogue with the husband is very important because it creates a close bond in their lives. However, for men such closeness is not a priority. Another important aspect for women while holding a conversation is to capture the total attention because it makes them feel important. On the other hand, men do not have the necessity to prove a point at home thats why they remain silent in most of the conversation. In addition to it, some men do not pay attention to womens conversation because they do not want to be seen as subordinated nor weak. But if they do engage in a conversation, “boys tend to jump from topic to topic,” as said by Eleanor Maccoby. (7).
Conversation styles are also crucial for a better understanding of the opposite-sex. Men in general do not use body language as to engage women in the dialogue but as to be seen as a possible candidate for a relationship. Even though, men do not use corporal signs to communicate, they prove their interest for the subjects by remaining silent which quiet often women interpret “as no attention at all.”(17). On the other hand, women find it supportive to agree or disagree while in the middle of the conversation which is called “participatory listenership.”(18) Men see these actions as signs of rudeness and disrespect. Unlike men, women use corporal movements, they do not only speak with their mouth but also with the hands, eyes and any possible body part to make a point in the conversation.
Understanding the methods of communication for women can be a little frustrating because men have different ways to accommodate themselves depending on the topic. In many cases men has to adapt him or change his habits
