Ethics Awareness Inventory Analysis
I have often heard myself saying, “You have choices to make, pick the one that right for you.” I have heard my conscience tell me whether something is right or wrong. These are traits of my ethical perspective. The results of my ethics awareness inventory where right on the button. I was clearly Obligation with a score of 5 . I feel it is my duty to treat other people, as I would want to be treated, with respect.
Working as a nurse in a jail can sometimes cause a conflict with this ethic profile. On one hand I feel that people have a right to be treated with respect but some of the people I provide care to have committed terrible crimes. To me their behavior is either right or it is wrong, with the later being the most common. You do not see people in jail for doing something right. I have sometimes found it difficult to provide the standard of care to inmates but, as the inventory showed, I value human life and believe all people have a right to health care. The inventory also showed that I believe people make choices in life and they have to live with the consequences of those choices. My children have known those words from the time they were two years old.
One of my duties as a nurse manager is to write new policies and update the old policies. This is a part of my job I like most. To me the policies are a guidebook on organizational values. They represent in part, what the organization wants from you. What is seen as the right way for a person to behave and do their job.
At times, I have had conflicts with this ethics trait, especially at work. I am good at not letting the crime interfere with the care I give to an inmate but I struggle with this daily. I have lost all faith in the justice system. I see too many criminals get their hand slapped and the victim never get proper justice.
