Argentina
Argentina was originally inhabited by two tribes, the Diaguita and the Guarani. The Diaguita mainly inhabited the west while the Guarani resided mainly in the east. First European contact with Argentina came in the form of Juan Diaz De Solis, a Spanish explorer. He was killed by the natives and European efforts to establish the colony of Buenos Aires in 1536 was thwarted as well. It wasnt until 1580 that Buenos Aires was successfully established and with its European inhabitants came many aspects of Europeans culture. Clothing, language, and religion were among the main aspects of European culture. The main Language was Spanish and the main religion was Catholicism. Although the Spanish were making contact with Argentina, the lack of gold and silver resources kept their interest in surrounding countries for many years.
Justo Jose de Urquiza became Argentinas first president in 1853 and Buenos Aires became Argentinas capital city in 1880. Argentina started off as a democracy but was plunged into military rule in 1930. In 1983, democracy was permanently re-established with Raul Alfonsin being elected as president. Presidents have served terms and been elected to office ever since.
Argentina is located in South America bordering five other countries. These countries are Chili, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Its the second largest country in South America with Brazil being the first. Its area consists of 1,073,518 square miles inhabiting nearly forty one million people. Aconcagua stands as its highest point at 22,834 ft and is considered the tallest peak in the world outside of Asia. The majority of its population is European estimated at 97%. Argentinas climate differs between its four major regions. The northern region is full of trees and swamps. The Andes Mountains lie in the western region. The Patagonian Plateau in the south can be cold. And the forth and most heavily populated region surrounding Buenos Aires is said to have a very pleasant climate with mild temperatures.
The official Language of Argentina is Spanish. The European that settled there in the 1500s resided mainly from Spain and with them came the official language. Some inhabitants speak some of the native tongues such as Quechan but this is a very small minority. There written language is Spanish as well.
Argentinas political system has changed back and forward over the years. In 1930, Argentina was ruled by a militarized government but in 1983 they switched to a democracy and have stayed that way ever since. The current president is Christina Fernandez de Kirchner who was elected in 2007 and won by a Landslide. Argentina has also had numerous political parties over the years despite the militaristic rule. They consist of Union Civica Radical Instransigente (UCRI), Union Civica Radical del Pueblo (UCRP), Ejercito Revolutionario del Pueblo (ERP), Peronist Armed Forces (FAP), Republic of Equal (ARI), and Union Civica Radical (UCR). There are only two major parties that are currently competing in Argentinean politics, The rightwing UCR and the leftwing ARI. Argentinas political system is stable but has only been that was for roughly 20-30 years.
Argentinas religion is mainly Roman Catholic but small traces of Islamic, Jewish, Protestant, and Evangelic cultures are starting to move in from surrounding countries. There Roman Catholic heritage comes from the Spanards that came from Europe and established a lot of Argentinas cultural beliefs.
Hofstedes ratings in Argentina are all pretty average in ranking with a few exceptions. Argentina is about half and half on the individualism and collectivism scale. Its different throughout certain areas of the country. Its power distance rating is a 49 which is almost dead center of the scale. Its more of a masculinity culture but only by a very short margin. Argentinas Uncertainty avoidance is actually very high with a rating of 86 on the scale. Finally Argentina is a short-term oriented country.
