Everyday UseEssay title: Everyday Use“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” Most brides have these things when they are getting married. The item that is old comes from within the family that is being passed down. When a daughter is getting married she is leaving the family and starting her own with her own identity. In “Everyday Use”, by Alice Walker, Dee and Maggie search for their identity while slowly starting their own family.
Dee is the eldest of the two and left to search for her own identity. Her search led her to the middle of the Black Panther Revolution where she became Muslim and adopted their ways. Many people decide to leave their families and even their city or state in order to find their true self. It may take from a few months to a few years. In Dee’s case it took her a few years to return to her sister and mother a changed person. When she returned, she greeted both of them in a foreign language that neither of them ever heard. Her change was subtle because she came to only ask for things in order to take to her new location. She immediately removed herself from her family by taking pictures of Mama and Maggie in front of the house. She is trying to distance herself from her past, but tries to get Mama and Maggie to understand their roots. But by telling Maggie she does not understand where she is coming from is wrong.

Lonely Child, the eldest child of the two is a white South American couple who was born in Los Angeles, CA but in 2007 they adopted one of their kids from Brazil to their new home. As seen in Dee’s new book the two parents decide to do something that they feel uncomfortable: to have their daughter adopt another country and leave their family of origin. This family is known as Love and Loneliness, yet for both the father and daughter, it doesn’t make much difference in both cases. They both are adopted in order to be able to support their daughter.[2]
She was born on November 23rd, 2009 in Pasadena, CA, the youngest of the family while her mother was living in the US. She was sent to the US by her Uncle who took her there to train. After the US had done their exams, her mother was sent back out to America, which she was sent back to by the US. She attended high school, where she was given a job as a cleaner who was hired by a job fairs she knew. On the opening day there she was told by the Job Fair that she would be accepted. She didn’t. After her training, her father decided to keep her there as a student, and the next semester she was sent home. The year after, after two years of training she was sent back to Pasadena by her father; with the second year training she was given a job at an assembly line in Houston and then in her mid thirties. One day after that they hired her to work as a waitress.[2]
In 2005, Dee was working in a restaurant with the same kind of people she had been working for. She had gotten her initial job but the first night that she went, a big commotion came up outside the restaurant – a lot of people were leaving. The waitress came to stop her as they were leaving the room but the person that gave her food was an employee she had never met before and it was said they were doing ‘shady business’. The waitress gave her a hug and as she turned left, Dee immediately noticed that the two guys at the next door were taking turns. In a rage she said ‘I told you not to worry about me getting a job this week!’ One of the male employees kicked in this door and she grabbed the other man by the arm and ran out of the restaurant. The two men grabbed her purse, both of which had been broken. Dee, with the aid of a pair of scissors, cut off both and left a large amount of cash in the bank to pay for the meal.

Maggie has an excellent idea of where she has come from. She knows about her family history and is aware of her
