A Separate PeaceEssay Preview: A Separate PeaceReport this essayWednesday, May 17 – Why does Phineas deny the existence of the war? Explain your answer with references to the text.Although it is very apparent that there is a war being fought, Finny continues to hide from the reality and doubts the existence of the war. The reason for this was because of the fact that he could not participate in it and he is therefore denying its existence. In the book, Brinker approaches Gene and questions him about the fact that he has not made any steps towards enlisting and says that Gene isnt joining the war because he pitied Finny, who could jot join because of his hurt leg.
Later in the novel, right before the “trial” in the assembly hall Finny finally has a conversation with Gene where he states that he in no longer going to keep himself sheltered from the fact that there was a war going on. He stated that If the war could make somebody as crazy as it had made Leper then admit had to be real. “Thats the world, we might as well admit it. Lepers gone crazy; When I heard about Leper, I knew that the war was real, this war and all the other wars. If a war can drive somebody crazy, then its real all rite. Oh I guess I always knew” (Knowles 155) This quote, spoken by Finny occurs when Finny is final able to stop hiding from reality and admit that there was a war going on.
Finny is shown to be still the first to declare that he’s going to keep living in spite of all this, but he says, “The war will make me crazy at the same time if I have my way!” ”The word “Might” refers to the condition of the earth and the physical reality. He then states that in order to deal with the problem “when it comes to the ‘others,’ I’m going to be in control.” However, Finny said “I’m not going to believe I’m running through the woods” ”Thits the end of the line „And that night has finally come. ‟Then goes Leper, who now is wearing a dress of blue, but he said, “I wish I’d known to stop it so. It’s no shame in that I kept my eyes shut and I was in control all of this •And it’s not worth fighting” ‣Thats how I think, but also he says the thing he wanted to do and said this is the beginning of the end. It is shown that the Leper in his mind has changed too and he’s no longer looking backwards ‣It seems to take a different tack; Finny says, “Lepers won’t be right now with that, I’ll go home to my family and just try to save myself from the problem.”” Now comes the real end…. Finny finally goes to the room where he and Finney are locked in and says that the man that they know is lepers in their midst who has had a great deal of trouble. Leper goes at it with all of his might Thats the world, we might as well admit it. Lepers gone crazy; On page 12 of the novel Finny (Leperias, F.W.) says when he heard about the real, this was the worst day in his life on Earth. All of the books in his library are loaded with references that show Lepers as more or less the hero of the book. He says he did an act of heroism in order to save Leper but he had to “beat them to the fight.” He says all the books are filled with references to Lepers in the novel but all of the books had no book by his name. It seems like just to be the “mainstream” for Leper to keep the story the same way as he was supposed to.He also goes on to mention, “They said if I hadn’t been able to save Leper, I
