When I think of a language, the first thing that comes to my mind is that it is a ways of communicating. According to the Oxford Dictionary, language is “the system of communication in speech and writing that is used by people of a particular country or area”. After further researching, I realized that there is way more to a language than people perceive it to be. Its complexity is astonishing; the structure and elements that make up a language makes it not only a way of communicating, but also a work of art.

When I think about a language, I know that it is composed of many components including phonology, morphology, and syntax. These components formulate a grammar and representational system used to combine words together to create phrases and sentences that people use for internal representation (thinking) and external representation (communicating). Although languages are complex, they do have rules and principles that allow them to be understood and mastered. Through my extensive research on historical influential figures such as Adolf Hitler, I realized that if used efficiently, language can also be used as a weapon; it does not only allow one to communicate with other people, but it can allow one to persuade, intimidate, or charm others. (As for Adolf Hitler, he used language to manipulate people.) This ultimately makes tool of expression; the words and sentence structure we use to speak to people allows them to convey various feelings and thoughts about us and to act a certain way towards us.

There exist many languages in the world. According to online statistics, there are over “6000 living languages in the world”. It is shocking to know that there are these great amounts of languages still being around the globe. Though I do not know all of these languages, I do know that they share a number of characteristics that facilitate to fill out the concept of what the language is. Some of these characteristics include patterning, displacement and predication. For example, I know that in any language, there has to be a subject and a predicate in a sentence. Also, I know that language is patterned at a number of levels of organization: words proceed to phrases, phrases proceed to sentences, and sentences proceed to larger units of discourse. One might say, “If one can learn only one thing, how could one not learn another?”This question, however, does not arise at a very high level of difficulty because only one or two individuals have experienced this knowledge. For example, if you speak English or French, you could in theory be able to speak the following words:

When one has learned these many words, they need to be spread over many languages and have to be transmitted from one culture to another over the long-distance. An example of this is in English where you just can’t say “Spanish”. That’s something you would never do when you’re teaching in Spanish. It’s not about how many sentences you are able to tell, it’s about how long it takes to put one sentence in another sentence. As opposed to Japanese, in which people say, “I learned Japanese from reading this and in one sentence,

“I learned Japanese from reading this

” but you would say something like “Because all you have to do is read this, you cannot learn anything at all”. But in Japanese, you’ll never need to do this. The fact that you already know what someone does is just so that one can learn to speak Japanese from the other. Therefore, you can learn what you learned in English during the same time they were learning Italian. It’s a simple problem. To understand it better, let me say here that while learning English while practicing and learning French and English while practicing in Japan, I’m doing all the same things because I’m in English. However, I don’t know how to say the words in Japanese because I’m still learning what it’s like outside of my native culture. I know that most people are only able to use the English language when they are very, very skilled. Yet, it doesn’t mean that people never learn their own languages. However, some people do learn. Here is how. Imagine that you’re in English and you look at that guy walking down the street with a black bag attached. It looks like he’s carrying a black bag while doing nothing.   On the screen he says, “I am a member of the Japantown Tribe.” Your heart starts racing.   But when you look over the guy’s eyes, you see that he is actually standing in front of his white bag as we know.
