Wanna hear with my EXTRA ear?
Imagine hearing things not just from the ears on your head, but from the rest of your body. You probably havent thought of this, right? Well, one crazy man did. No man in his right mind would surgically implant an ear on their inner forearm. Stelarc, an Australian artist surgically implanted an extra ear on his inner foreman, placing his feat in Ripleys list of Top 11 Strangest Stories of 2011. He spent ten years finding a surgeon who would help him complete his crazy “dream” and now is convinced that he can help many others by being an “acoustic device for other people.”
Who needs an extra ear, when one has two perfectly good ears? This man allegedly believes by attaching an extra ear on his forearm, he is “helping” people by being an acoustic device for other people. If others out there dont have their own ears as their own acoustic device, how would they even hear Stelarcs device? Not only is Stelarcs feat a waste of time, money, and media, its completely nonsense. I feel this way not only because rhetorically speaking no-one would want to know what an arm is hearing when people already have two perfectly good ears when fortunately born. Everyone can have dreams, but this “dream” is a nuisance. I personally argue that this artists main purpose for this fanfare is to gather some public attention. This artist may think hes doing everyone a favor, but sadly no. Not only is his artwork “Ear on Arm” disgusting and produces queasiness in people who have seen the ear whether in person or online, like the article stated, “There are some things arms do that we just dont want to hear.” I think this is nonsense because by planting this surgically induced ear on his arm doesnt benefit the artist in anyway. It wont benefit anyone browsing the web and coming across an ear planted in a mans arm. This certainly is sufficient to say that the ear is complete nonsense.
I personally would not like to listen through that ear or look at that arm on Stelarc. Not only is it silly and pointless, its equivalent to seeing some crazy fool sticking an eye on his foot for others to see with.
