Families Today – What Is a Family? – Course Note – Marce73205SearchEssaysSign upSign inContact usTweetIndex/Social IssuesFamilies Today – What Is a Family?FAMILIES TODAYWhat is a family? The composition of families today has become diversified. The meaning of what a family constitutes has changed throughout the years. The word family is difficult to define since many different people have different ideas on what a family consists of. To some it could mean being married to the person you love be it of the opposite sex or same sex, it is someone you share deep feelings for. There are also others who believe that family is comprised of not only husband, wife and children but of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. There is no right or wrong answer it all depends on what your perception is. In this day and age Family is what you make of it, I believe that people are free to choose what they want and live however they want. This allows the family dynamics to flourish while allowing people to choose their own definition of family.

Today’s family is not limited to husband, wife, and children, now you have single moms or single dads raising children on their own. In single-parent homes, it is usually necessary for that parent to work outside the home in order to properly provide for their children. You also have the families in which the woman is the breadwinner and the dad is the stay at home parent. It was unheard of for a man to be the one who stayed home and took care of the children. But now more and more fathers want to be home for their children, therefore the mom has taken on the role of head of household. In addition to fathers taking over the role of stay at home parents you also now have grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Since we are making a change, parents are being asked to leave the workplace and pursue other careers that are more involved with a child. This means that we will no longer have more fathers in a household, meaning that the women who need to support their child are taking greater responsibility in raising their child that they are not yet being given.

Maternity leave is now one of these careers that many mothers have a hard time accepting. For example, a woman who works full-time has to leave the job that she loves because of work responsibilities with her husband, father, or brother or sister, and is only given time off because of an illness or other disability. There is also the possibility that she will lose her job and the money she is earning. It is often a matter of years, but for mothers the lack of the option of working, or of doing whatever it is they truly want to do, is a great loss.

Once mothers are forced to leave the work world because they are looking for a position they can actually afford, it is even harder for them to find other opportunities that have the potential to pay for themselves or their kids.

Women who are looking to have children at work need many other types of support. To qualify as an active worker in the workforce, women have to earn as little as $10-20 an hour while also not having to miss a day of school. Although it is not always possible to get paid overtime and the hours overtime must meet, the work schedule will not be the norm when it comes to the time that women are in their work. Even if they can complete a year of school and make it past the age of 35, for the time being for those who do work they will be required to work only at paid work. Even if they do not need to work with their family every day, being paid only $10-20 an hour is still considered pay.

Maternity leave is an extreme example of why this will soon be a more necessary form of childcare. Now at a very young age women from all walks of life will be faced with multiple careers that require childcare. As the number of mothers going to work makes it necessary for many to have to raise their children, many women in these jobs will have to face more and more of this and make decisions on how we make our children’s lives happier.

While there are many women going to work and many making the cut for themselves as a result of the shift away from the domestic work world to a full-time career that does not involve work, many are forced to find alternative and more fulfilling ways of making ends meet. While we cannot completely eliminate the risk of having babies and having to choose between two jobs every day, many are able to manage it and go along with
