Who Needs College?
In her article, “Who needs College?”, which appeared in Family Circle, Linda Lee states that kids have opportunities to get good paying jobs without even going to college. A parent is not required to pay a lot of money for their child to be successful in getting a good paying job in their future. “But most kids today view college as a way to get a good job” (Lee, 2001).
The United States of America is rated second in the highest number of college graduates, but “only 27 percent of Americans have a bachelors degree or higher” (Lee, 2001). With that ratio, that lets us know that a lot of kids are being successful without going to college and getting a degree.
At first, most good paying jobs required a person to have a college degree. Then computer and technology came into play and a person could have a high paying job without a college degree because some of the computer field jobs only required a lot of training instead of a college degree. So after all, who is to say that you need a college degree to make a lot of money?
Linda Lee stated that popular people, such as Bill Gates, dropped out of college and still considered to be one of the richest people in the world. Her “hair colorist makes #300,000 a year without a degree” (Lee, 2001). Therefore, this let us know that people do not need a college degree to be successful.
After spending over $1,000 a week, for what she called a “pleasure cruise” for her college son, she made him learn responsibility by telling him that he had to come out of college for the moment and get a job. He ended up getting a pretty good paying job and was seeking career opportunities within the job. Through this process he learned how to be responsible, independent, manage paying bills, and basically how to grow up to become a man.
